Is it okay that I stopped wearing my retainer?!

Question: Is it okay that I stopped wearing my retainer.?
I got braces when I was 12, had them taken off when I was 14, and now I'm 18. I wore my retainer 24/7 for 6 months, then just at night, every night. But within the past couple months I've been getting lazy and haven't been wearing it as often, and now I haven't worn it for two weeks. My teeth still look perfectly straight. Is it okay by now to stop wearing my retainer.?Health Question & Answer

I stopped wearing my retainers and over a few years my teeth went squint again. Totally regret it now deary. If I were you I would get wearing it again. You may even find it might not fit as I did.Health Question & Answer

There are different reasons why you might need a retainer. The most common reason is to help your teeth stay set in their new positions after wearing braces. It's important to wear your retainer because as your body grows, your teeth do some shifting. The retainer helps to control this shifting, which occurs naturally.Health Question & Answer

I think its okay but why dont you wear them when you sleep or something.? That way you wont even notice them and neither will others but you can still keep wearing them for awhile. Even if you completely stop and never wear them again I doubt your teeth will go back to being crooked...theyll probably stay straight but maybe loosen up a little bit.

Could you answer mine too.?Health Question & Answer

Nope, not okay.

It may seem the same when you don't wear your retainer but your teeth do become less straight, even if you can't see it.

If you keep it out for too long your teeth wil become how they were before and you have to go trough the complete retainer misery again.

So wear it!Health Question & Answer

Same thing happened with my friend.

She quit wearing them every night, but did promise herself she'd wear them at least once per night, per month. Teeth are still straight.Health Question & Answer

My sister quit wearing her retainer in college and her dentist just told her he thinks she needs braces again. :( I'd wear it at night.Health Question & Answer

If they look fine, than I'd say it's fine.
But maybe, to make sure, try fitting the retainer onto your teeth to see if it still fits, every few weeks.

That, or ask your orthodontist. =)Health Question & Answer
