My son has woken up with a light grey front tooth ?!

Question: My son has woken up with a light grey front tooth .?
My son has woken up with a light grey front tooth with a white tip at the bottom (the white tip being the Originall colour), its as if the colour has drained from the tooth. The tooth in question is a brand new adult tooth that has only appeared over the last few weeks and is still not completely formed yet his other front tooth sprouted a month or two ago perfectly white.

I have been reading the net which has totally panicked me, some websites saying a grey tooth could represent a dead tooth. I have spoken with his dentist who has said providing the tooth is not causing discomfort that they do not see it as an emergency and will see him in January (the next available appointment)

Has anyone else had a similar experience with a child that can maybe put me out of my misery and confirm everything is ok.? or should I rush him to an emergency appointment tommorow.?

Thanks in Advance

If the tooth is not hurting him, there is no need to rush to an emergency appointment. There would not be anything the dentist can do today that would change in a few weeks.

There are several causes for a grey color. Trauma or medication from when the tooth was still forming below the gumline are common causes. The tooth may have erupted more recently and now you are seeing the discoloration, where as before you were only seeing the white tip.

As long as he is not complaining of sensitivity and you do not see a "pimple-like" blister above the tooth on the gum, then it should be fine to wait for the appoinment. The blister would indicate and abscess and that the tooth is dying.Health Question & Answer

Did he hit his mouth on something.? A tooth can turn grey after an injury. Have him checked by a dentist. Maybe there's another reason for the color of the tooth, such as an infection in his gums. If he has an infection, the dentist can prescribe antibiotics. But beware, some antibiotics can also cause teeth to discolor, so discuss your options with the dentist.Health Question & Answer

My son suffered a similar situation after a swimming accident at age 9. His brand new adult tooth was knocked loose, and althought they tried to flipper splint it, it still died. So he had to have a root canal done on the tooth, and he has not had a single problem with it since. I bet they will recommend a root canal for your son's tooth.Health Question & Answer
