They are called either Trutain or Essex, I have heard doctors call them by both names. They are made by pressurizing a disc of clear plastic over your model so that they take on the shape of your teeth, then they are cut out and trimmed into a horseshoe shape.
To clean them, just brush with toothpaste and a toothbrush.
NEVER use hot water as this will cause them to distort.
Once every week or so soak them in some Efferdent or other denture cleanser to prevent buildup.Health Question & Answer

my boyfriend has that type of retainer, he cleans it with the stuff you clean dentures with ( something like eferdent - it's an anti-bacterial tablet that dissolves). I tried it for my regular retainer - the kind with the wire that shows - and it worked great, a lot less mess!Health Question & Answer
