Is it scary to get your wisdom teeth removed?!

Question: Is it scary to get your wisdom teeth removed.?
I'm 20 and my wisdom teeth are coming in and are getting to be quite painful. I know I need them removed but I'm very frightened, because I have a phobia of sharp objects.

What happens when you get your wisdom teeth removed.? Details, please! (But not gross ones.)

Oh, and only answer if you've actually had them taken out, not if you just think you know how it goes.Health Question & Answer

It's scary, yes, but not overly painful.

I got mine out December 11th (6 days ago), plus a fifth tooth which required the oral surgeon to remove a small portion of my jaw bone. All four wisdom teeth were impacted, as well. If I (the biggest baby when it comes to dental work) can get that done, you'll be fine!

The staff has you sit down in a chair. They hook you up to monitors to keep an eye on you during the surgery. A nurse starts your IV, starts you on IV fluids to keep you hydrated, and then they push the anaesthesia. You don't feel tired at first, and then all the sudden you're out. (Of course, if you're getting them pulled while you're awake, I'm probably not the person to be answering this question...)
Anyway, after that, I remember my friend and the nurse helping me to the car while it was raining, and then I crashed on the futon when I got home. That's all I remember about the surgery.

You get home, take your meds, sleep. Not being able to eat easily is the worst part about the whole experience.

I also got a dry socket, and I had a huge incision in the front of my mouth from the fifth tooth... so, obviously, you won't have that.

You'll be fine! Many people go through this daily.Health Question & Answer

I just had mine removed yesterday and the experience was not very bad at all. When i got there they injected me with an anesthetic to put me asleep. It seemed like seconds i woke up and there was no pain because i was so drugged up. When i got home an hour or so later it began to hurt a fair bit, but it subsided after an hour. By this time there was only pain if i tried to move my mouth so i could no relax. also the first time i changed the gauze there was a lot of blood, the Second time (an hour later) there was only a small amount, and the 3rd none at all. Once the freezing wears off which usually takes a few hours the pain should be gone. There will just be frustration that you cant eat solids and you can hardly move your mouth. On the whole the experience was not terrible so you should have no reason of being afraid. REMEMBER Ice constantly and good luck:)Health Question & Answer

I'd like to give you details but I can't remember a thing. I walked in they stuck a needle in my arm and asked me to count backwards from 100. I didn't get past 90. I awoke on a bed in a different room with a mouth full of blood and gauze. I was handed four bloody broken teeth and went home. The worst part, I found about the experience, was getting food stuck in the holes. I was given "Tylenol 3" but I did not feel enough pain to take them. I felt pretty good after three days.

Don't be frightened. If you are not getting knocked out then I am sure there will be pain during the extraction but I'm sure it's not terrible. I have one word of advice. DON'T PUT IT OFF. if your feeling pain get them out or you might end up getting them out in an emergency situation. Good luck and don't sweat it.Health Question & Answer

It's not that bad, really. Depending on the oral surgeon, they'll probably give you some sort of gas to put you into a twilight sort of sleep. You won't feel anything and you won't hear anything. Next thing you know...they are finished and you are trying to wake up. I was pretty wasted when I woke up from the gas but it was actually a little fun. I just felt drunk. For a few days they'll be sore and you'll need to make sure you clean them out after every meal so an infection doesn't start. I had three pulled and one had to be cut out and I got dry socket in the one that had to be cut out, but the rest healed fine. Dry socket hurts but it wasn't the end of the world. I took a couple of advil and called the surgeon and went in and they fixed it! You'll be fine! I would suggest getting them all done at once though. Good luck!Health Question & Answer

i haven't had mine removed.
however, people have different opinions if it was scary when it was removed. and people most everyday, gets them removed.
Maybe, try not thinking of being scared, and think of the positive.

good luck, Merry Christmas!Health Question & Answer

I had all four taken out at once. I really didn't have any problems.Health Question & Answer

I had all four taken out when I was 16 (21 now). It was no big deal. This is how it went: I went to the oral surgeon, got an IV put in, and I woke up on the couch at home! haha... Most places give you a choice on whether you want to stay awake or get put to sleep. I could never sit there awake w/ people cutting stuff out of my mouth, so I chose the IV route.

Mine hadn't come out yet, so they dug them out b/c they were growing slanted so they would've made my, already straight, teeth crooked! If the doctor has a good hand you won't bruise. I didn't bruise at all. When you get home you change out the gauze every hour or so b/c of the blood. It's not as painful as they say. They said not to talk or do too much w/ your mouth the days following the surgery, but I was fine the next day. The stitches were still there but they didn't hurt. They just felt funny when they touched my tongue (vice versa). You have to eat soft foods for about 1 wk and that hurts just a little, but it's more like being sore than being in pain.

I can't remember what happened to my stitches, I think they were the dissolving kind. also, I had go back about 2 or 3 wks after for a check up/follow up appt. He gave me a syringe at that appt to wash out the holes where they teeth were taken out of. The holes close up on their own w/in a few wks.

I tend to talk a lot, so sorry if any of this is overshare. Hope this helps!Health Question & Answer

Well it depends on your sedation options lol. i just did local anesthetic via needle injections and laughing gas. the needles kinda hurt but no biggie. at certain points if i began to feel pain (which was not too bad) the gas leaves you aware enough to mouth to the doctor to give you more anesthesia. all you feel when your are sedated is some pulling (not pain though), you hear the drill and the grossest part is you can taste the like sediment from your sanded down teeth. the gas makes you really calm and mellow and you feel almost numb. i think those two things were sufficient without being put completely under. there is not much blood really during the procedure. the thing is that afterword there are these rules you have to follow. like your mouth will be full of blood and saliva for quite a few hours because ur not supposed to spit or else you will spit out the scab and it wont heal. when the anesthesia wears off the pain sets in. its the strangest kind of pain you will ever feel. its like.. an itch that is so itchy its painful.. i dunno you will see. they give you painkillers which work quite well, and help you mellow out and sleep,.. but they can get scary so dont take them any more than you REALLY have to. you ll get annoyed running your tongue over the stitches constantly. they feel like little plastic hairs in your mouth. i suggest getting ones that dissolve if they say its ok. i think getting the stitches being removed was the WORST part.. it hurt like crap. but yea thats basically the whole experience.. ALL THE BEST! it really isnt that bad youll be ok! :)Health Question & Answer
