Splints can work but try this instead for about a week. You MUST be commited to this, which means no cheating yourself in doing this.
First thing is you need to pick a date and go with it. You will need to go on a very very soft food diet, which means NO bagels, NO gum, and NO salads. Just very soft foods, such as pastas, mashed potatoes, yogurts, pudding etc. Then you must take 800 mgs of ibuprofen (advil, because the coating is best) 4x's a day not to exceed 2400 mgs in a 24 hour period. Then whenever you wish, take a warm moist cloth and hold it to your jaw joint area for about 30 seconds, followed immediately by a cold cloth. Do this for about 10 minutes.

The TMJ has NOTHING to do with wisdom teeth wheather you have them or not. There are long term studies that prove this.

Without boring you with major details here is the short version of what could be going on. There is a disk between your skull and your lower jaw bone. Sometimes that disk becomes displaced, You have to rest your jaw, which is very difficult to do since you have to eat and speak. Unlike if you hurt your knee and can put it up for a week.

Try the soft food/ibuprofen thing for a week and like I said you must make a commitment to do it. If you are still in major pain, go see an orthodontist or dentist that has done a fellowship in TMJ. Spints do work, they are a pain in the butt, and you will speak a bit funny with them at first, people will probably notice that you have something in your mouth.
Another thing is if you jaw locks, DO NOT TRY TO UNLOCK IT by making it "pop" back into place. Softly relax and massage it, it will eventually go back.

Good luck, I hope this works for you. It's much cheaper than splint therapy.Health Question & Answer
