Please can a dentist help me?!

Question: Please can a dentist help me.?
for the past 2 weeks i've been really suffering with a tooth abscess. i'm currently 30weeks pregnant and have been taking cocodamol and amoxcilin 500mg which hasn't really done much. my dentist (on monday-5days ago) drilled out most of my tooth to drain off the abscess. he then put some anticeptic stuff inside and left it open like that for 3 days. during this time it was so much better. the pain was alot better but my lips and the side of my face are still completey numb. when i went back after the 3 days he just put a temporary filling to close it to stop food getting in but since he done that it's all flared back up again and i'm in alot of pain again. i've been to the emergency dentist, dentaline this morning where she opened it up to try to relieve some of the pressure but because she's closed it up again i'm still in pain. i'm getting really fed up with this now and don't like keep taking pain relief and antibiotics while i'm pregnant. i've even tried taking the tooth out myself with pliers when i've got myself in such a state with the pain. please help!!Health Question & Answer

First of all do not try to take a tooth out by yourself. There are so many complications that can come from that they are countless. I would suggest you go back to the emergency dentist and tell her that you are still in excruciating pain and tell her that before when the tooth was left open it helped. Another option is she could do an I & D (Incision and Drainage) where she makes a small incision on the site on the gum. She can then milk out most of the abscess. She can even use a piece of rubber dam and stitch it in place in that area to leave a drain. This would in affect leave the area open and the abcess would drain until you can get further treatment.

As far as taking antibiotics, those should not be a problem with your pregnancy. I do not know what the other medication is...so I suggest you look it up on WebMD and read about it and it's side effects.

Having an abcess while you are pregnant is in good. This is an infection and could get into your blood stream and spread throughout you body. While those chances are slim..it can happen and do not let anyone...not even a dentist or doctor tell you different.

Take care of this today. Even if you have to go to the ER.Health Question & Answer

What you need to do is remove the temporary filling and see if things get better. The abscess process is a fermentation process and releases gas. The pressure builds up and presses against the nervous system around the tooth. I solve this by punching a hole in the temporary to relieve the pressure. As soon as you can, you need to go to your dentist, or a endodontist to have the tooth re irrigated. Ask to have a hole punched in the temporary. Stay on the amoxicillin. However, don't be surprised is your dentist puts you an clindamycin. Don't try to take your tooth out by yourself, that is dangerous.

you need to have a root canal or have this tooth extracted. the reason the pain comes is because the pus from the infection has nowhere to drain to so it presses against the bone around the roots of the tooth.the only way to solve this once and for all is to do a root canal or extract the tooth. antibiotics are only a temporary fix because the cause of the infection (whether it's a cavity or gum and bone problems) is still present so the infection will come backHealth Question & Answer
