Vicodin can cause mood changes and unusual thoughts of behavior. If you are on an antidepressent for your depression while taking Vicodin you could have a reaction by combining the two drugs. Below I have listed two websites for you to check out that gives you all the information you could need on Vicodin, side effects and drugs that you should not take it with.

As far as other medications for pain you state you are taking two ibuprofen of 200mg each. You can take up to four at a time, which is the same as taking 800mg of Motrin. That will help. You can cut the pill in half or in fourths with a pill cutter that you can get at any pharmacy. You can try with a knife...but it is more difficult and can lead to the pill crumbling and/or flying off to where you cannot find it. I cannot say for sure...but you can ask your pharmacist, if you are taking capsules you may be able to open them up and put the powder inside into a food like pudding and stir it up and then eat all your pudding. Make sure that you ask your pharmacist if you can do this and you do it that the medication will still be as affective as if you did not do it. They may also recommend a different food. Do not use juice...especially if it is acidic...it could break down the properties of the medicine. It is not uncommon but you may or may not get a stomach ache. If you do get one and this stomach ache is getting out of control then you will have to talk to your doctor about what to take.

Another alternative is to take two ibuprofen 200mg each then two hours later take two 500mg of tylenol. Do this every two hours until you feel like the pain is subsiding. You can break these up into fourths.

If you need something stronger call your oral surgeon or whoever is on call for him/her and tell them that you were given Vicodin and how it made you feel. also tell them your medical history...including the depression and any other medications you are taking. Some medications interact with each other and that sounds like the situation in your case. You can also discuss this with your pharmacist. He/she will know this also. But talking to your oral surgeon is best as they can call in some different medication if you need it.

I also suggest you do warm salt water rinses. The best way to do this is to put it in your mouth. DO NOT SWISH, but tilt your head from side to side so the liquid goes from side to side and reaches the surgical area. You may want to leave you head tilted to each side for a few seconds just to make sure that it is getting where it needs to be. Once you have done that for about a minute then lean over the sink and let if flow out of your mouth. DO NOT SPIT IT OUT. It may leave an unpleasant taste in your mouth, but if will just last a few minutes and it will help a lot.

I understand you feeling of not having control of your emotions or your thoughts. It is very debilitating and for someone who is already suffering from depression this could exasperate the situation further. What you are experiencing is not uncommon. It does not happen often but again it is not uncommon.

You did not say how long ago these extractions were done. One thing you need to be sure of is that you do not have dry sockets. Those can be very very painful. You can get a dry socket on the first or second day after your surgery. If you do not know what a dry socket is, it is where the clot has come dislodged and left the socket where the tooth was pulled exposed. This includes the bone and the nerves. Some of the ways to get dry sockets are smoking, drinking through a straw, spitting a lot, swishing and spitting, sucking. All of these things cause a sucking action and even if you have stitches in place the clot can be pulled out through a sucking action. Trust me....it happened to me and I had stitches. If you have a dry socket the best thing for that is a special gauze coated with oil of clove. If you cannot get to the oral surgeon before Monday then go to the drug store and get some oil of clove and rub it on the area(s) affected. It will add some relief.

If you still have a copy of the instructions that the oral surgeon gave you...then re-read them and make sure that you are not doing anything on that list that they caution you not to do and do the things that they tell you to do. If they did not give you a list...then below is another website you can refer to for instructions on how to care for oral surgical sites.

Best wishes...and remember if this gets too uncomfortable...call your oral surgeon immediately. There will be someone on call for him/her that can instruct you what to do. Just be sure you tell them everything. They cannot give you accurate advice without know all your health conditions, medications you are taking, and things you have been doing to try to resolve the problem.Health Question & Answer
