Dental filling and restoration?!

Question: Dental filling and restoration.?
Do dental assistants replace fillings sometimes.? I went to the dentist today and a dental assistant replaced one of my large fillings that fell out. also said that I needed a tooth restoration. Do you think this filling will at least last 2 weeks until I go back to the dentist for a restoration.? The filling I got was white.Health Question & Answer

Wow. I lost part of a filling over the weekend, went in today and the asst also put white temp filling material in my tooth...it tasted of cloves but is snowy white. My appt to have the tooth checked by the dentist (who wasn't in today) is in 1 month. I wasn't told not to chew hard things on that side or given any restrictions. She simply told me she felt the material she used was the best temporary option until they decide to either replace the old filling or crown the tooth.

Interesting that you had a similar experience, when before today I'd never had work done by a dentist's asst nor had the white filling type material used on me.Health Question & Answer

I work as a dental nurse and I am not allowed to perform any such procedure.

If it was a white filling it was most likely one of the following:
Temporary filling: white crumbly blob of past that comes straight from a pot
Glass Ionomer: Two part powder and liquid mix to make a off colour sticky filling
Composite: Tooth is etched using acid and then a special composite resin is put onto the tooth and hardened using UV light.

Even a temporary filling should last two weeks, although it may start to crumble.Health Question & Answer
