Just got my bottom 2 wisdom teeth extracted.. Questions.?!

Question: Just got my bottom 2 wisdom teeth extracted.. Questions..?
What should I be doing in the first 24 hours.? I know that I should be biting down on gauze til bleeding subsides but I'm just really scared of getting a dry socket.. How long does a it take from the time of extraction to when the blood clot has formed.. and how should I take care of it.? What should I be doing 24 hours after my extraction.? I'm not keen of swallowing my own blood so (excuse me if it gets a bit graphic.?) but I just let it collect it in my mouth and then let it dribble out into a piece of paper towel. also is breathing through my mouth bad.? I just need to really know the dos and don'ts. :(Health Question & Answer

i had my top and bottom right wisdom teeth surgically extracted on friday. my oral surgeon had me bite on the gauze for one hour, and then take it out. if you are still bleeding, change the gauze and keep doing that until it stops. (a little bit of blood is ok, and remember that the abundance of saliva in your mouth will make it appear that you are bleeding more than you are.)

to avoid dry socket, don't smoke, suck through a straw for at least 48 hours but preferably longer. breathing through your mouth is fine. don't rinse at all until 24 hours after surgery.

after 24 hours, rinse three times a day with 1/2 teaspoon salt to one glass of warm water. you can also brush the area gently, and brush your other teeth as you normally would. but don't spit! again, let the toothpaste and such dribble out of your mouth into the sink. it's not pretty, but it's necessary.

take the antibiotics now. they may upset your stomach a little, but it's important to prevent infection. make sure you eat something as soon as you feel able to (i didn't until the next day.)

oh and one thing that i read on here that i have found extremely helpful. get yourself a child-size toothbrush and use it for the first few days. you most likely won't be able to open your mouth all the way, and since the head of the brush is smaller, it will be much easier to maneuver.Health Question & Answer

I had one bottom one pulled out about 2-3 years ago. It took 3 days for the bleeding to stop. I woke up to find blood all over me and my bed sheets and pillow. I recommend sleeping on your back and not talking for a while. Breath through your nose too. Try and keep your mouth closed as much as possible. Try eating soup and drinking Welchs juice. Yes you will taste some blood, but it shouldnt bother you alot.Health Question & Answer

Your dentist should have given you a sheet of what to do and not to do. You are right to let the blood dribble out onto paper towel, spitting, drinking through a straw and smoking are definitely no no's for the first 48 hours. After the first 24 hours you should gently rinse your mouth with warm salt water (1/2 tsp to 1 cup water) and just let the water run into the sink (no spitting). After the first 3 days, the clot is usually formed enough that dry sockets are not much of a risk. There is a higher risk of dry socket in bottom teeth because there is less blood supply to the jaw, so be careful. You could have some pain and swelling for a few days, take Ibuprofen or alleve for that.Health Question & Answer
