Wisdom Teeth extraction (bottom2) and stitches..?!

Question: Wisdom Teeth extraction (bottom2) and stitches...?
I was wondering.. how will I be able to tell if my extraction site has blood clotted.? It's not bleeding (and if it does only a tiny bit) but.. all I see are stitches.. (well when I put my flash light all I can aim to see are stitches) Are the blood clots there.? or is it underneath the stitches.? I'm getting my stitches out one week from today.. What are my chances for a dry socket.? :(Health Question & Answer

Although I'm not a dentist or oral surgeon, I hope to be able to calm your fear with my experience of a dry socket (Alveolar Osteitis) after a root canal (it wasn't even wisdom teeth extraction, as mine came through straight, just a plain old root canal).

If you can see the stitches, your blood clot is "safe." It's when the extraction site is empty and all you can see is a hole that's the biggest red flag. If it's the latter, your excruciating pain will tell you before you even need to look. And that kind of pain is like no other pain: it feels like a sharp stab into your bones with EVERY breath you inhale; you'll be forced to breathe very shallow breaths because every little touch of air feels like hell. That's when the air goes into that hole and hits the exposed bone. Ugh, that memory makes me CRINGE.

The little bit of blood you described is a very good sign. If you've just had the extraction within the last 24 hours, DO NOT rinse your mouth yet. Wait 'til the day after and then rinse VERY gently with warm salt water. Dissolve a teaspoon of salt in 1 cup of warm water. Try not to touch it with your finger or tongue. Until your stitches are removed, just drink soup & eat the softest food possible, such as mashed potatoes, pudding, or apple sauce. But DO NOT even try any pasta or Chicken Noodle Soup yet.

Of course, following ALL of the after-care instructions are crucial, especially keeping the extraction sites clean. However, in my case, I thought pasta & Chicken Noodle Soup were soft enough, so I didn't think I could possibly "lose" my blood clot. I still can't remember if I accidentally swallowed it or spit it out during my not-so-gentle rinsing. But I will NEVER forget that dry-socket pain.

Hope this helps.
Best wishes & take care.Health Question & Answer

Everything sounds normal to me. My stitches feel out, I didn't know people had them taken out. You should only be worried about dry socket if you are still feeling pain after a week and its intense pain.
The blood clots deep beneath you shouldnt see them.. sometimes you can see holes lol gross right. They'll heal in time :) don't worry.Health Question & Answer

whatever you do, do NOT drink out of a straw! and just clean your teeth thoroughly; sometimes if your teeth hurt so badly its because of excess food. i was in horrible pain for 2 weeks after I got all 4 of my wisdom teeth extracted. I guess I didn't clean my teeth out well enough; because I went to the dentists, they very aggressively cleaned out my teeth, and then i felt better :)Health Question & Answer

The threads dissolve on their own. It doesn't take much to get them out if needed. Don't worry about it.Health Question & Answer
