I'm 20 years old with an under bite?!
Question: I'm 20 years old with an under bite.?
So when I was 12-13 I had braces to straighten my teeth and fix my underbite. It worked pretty good, when i got the braces off, my top front teeth just barely went over the bottom front teeth. I wore my retainer responsibly. But over the past year my jaw has grown a little more and now more under bite is more noticeable. The bottom 1/15 of my front teeth are behind the jaw teeth.
Ive become very self conscious about it. I'm afraid to show my teeth when I smile. I can kind of hide it by keeping my bottom lip over the bottom teeth, but its not as comfortable.
I know theres surgery available but i get anxious (and i take meds for anxiety) thinking about my jaw getting cut up. And how could I get surgery when I'm in college now and I plan on getting a job this summer.
Theres a chance I could still grow. I not sure what to do....Health Question & Answer

your still not too old to get that corrected w/ bracesHealth Question & Answer
You have what sounds like a developmental growth discrepancy between the upper & lower jaws. The problem may be in one or both jaws and generally requires surgery, which is pretty straightforward these days. You'd miss a couple of weeks of work. You should see an Oral & Maxillofacial surgeon for evaluation if you have any desire to have it corrected. He/she could explain everything in greater detail. The growth of the jaws is usually complete by age 18, but that can be checked as well.Health Question & Answer
Goto some orothodontists... there is a solution without surgery.. they will pull one or more of ur bottom teeth out and and then put braces on to close the gap fixing the underbiteHealth Question & Answer

go to see an orthoHealth Question & Answer
i am 19 & in the same position as you.. except mine is a lot worse, & i know it's so hard trying to hide it.. and i've never shown my teeth when i smiled
i consulted more than one ortho, who all told me that surgery was the only way to fix it. so i got braces 4 months ago.. & pulled out all my 4 wisdom teeth (even though i didn't need to), in preparation for my surgery/treatment. i also work in the summer & go to school now, but my surgeon (who is one of the best in my province), told me it was really no big deal; that i would be in the hospital by wednesday, & out by friday. he also told me to gain 10 lbs, cuz i'll be on a liquid diet. he said it was good that i had waited until my jaw had fully grown to get braces & start the treatment, to prevent what is now happening to you.
anyway, i did some research (which i recommend you do) and am so excited to get my teeth fixed! i am anxious too (its normal) but i think the benefits are greater than the cost (& im in canada so healthcare is free =D). but man, i am so excited! finally i can smile with confidence! i don't exactly know when my surgery will be (will find out in april), but my surgeon also promised me he would do it so it doesnt conflict w/ work/school.
anyway, i suggest you get a consultation from various orthos (they will give you your options), & if they think you really need surgery, they will recommend you to very good surgeons (ask for the best if you need). good luck & be strong!Health Question & Answer
