They're similar. The braces are put on to align your teeth and your bite. After the braces come off, the teeth can and will easily shift. The retainer is created to hold them in place when the braces come off. I've had my braces off for four years and I still wear my retainer, because your teeth constantly shift. Granted I only wear it at night..well...some nights.
