I am going to have my wisdom teeth extracted...?!

Question: I am going to have my wisdom teeth extracted....?
I am going to have all four of my wisdom teeth extracted on February 12, 2009. I am SO scared. I don't want to be in excrutiating pain and I want the surgery to be over quickly. One tooth already broke the gumline and the other three are still below the gumline (haven't erupted yet). I will be numbed locally and be given nitrous oxide gas as well. About three years ago I had four regular teeth extracted. I just felt the pain for one second and that was it. Four hours after the procedure I ate like normal. I am hoping that this one will be the same, but I highly doubt it. Do you feel more pain than a regular extraction.? Am I overreacting.? Please help me! I am going to cry of fear! I will be given pain meds if that makes a difference. Here is one more very important question: Will I be able to wear my retainer (I had braces) after the extractions.? Thank you in advance.Health Question & Answer

It's important that you are having your wisdom teeth removed after orthodontic treatment. Wisdom teeth can often cause your teeth to move out of the alignment that was created by your braces.

The pain after having your wisdom teeth removed is not much worse than a regular tooth extraction- but in all honesty, you will be more uncomfortable. I had all four of my wisdom teeth removed and it was bearable, The hardest part was feeling very sore after the procedure and not being able to chew. Often, an oral surgeon will remove one side (upper and lower) at a time so that you can chew on the other side. You may be having all four removed as one has already erupted. If any of your wisdom teeth which have not erupted are impacted (in position where it cannot erupt), you may feel a little more discomfort than the others - but nothing too terrible.

Some helpful advice would be to ask your oral surgeon for your pain meds RX in advance so that you can fill it the day before your procedure and stock up on some soft foods such as soup and jello and the like. also, a cold compress to the outer cheek helps alleviate the swelling which in turn cuts down on the pain.

With your retainer, I don't think you could wear it after the procedure, but make sure to check with your orthodontist in advance regarding that.

Good luck and don't worry and make sure you have someone drive you home from the office.Health Question & Answer

They give you good drugs when you have your wisdom teeth out. Vicodin. A couple things to remember:

1) If you take vicodin on an empty stomach, you will be violently ill. Always take vicodin with lots of food.

2) Take a vicodin BEFORE the Novocaine wears off. If you wait until you are in pain to take the vicodin, you will be in pain for quite some time.

3) don't drive, don't operate heavy machinery, don't drink, don't take more than directed, etc.Health Question & Answer

it's REALLY not that bad....i had all four out at once and i was terrified. honestly, i didn't feel a damn thing the whole time lol. wisdom teeth are different from regular extractions. i didn't eat much for a week, except for jello. don't worry about it. i felt more pain with regular extractions. i'm not sure about the retainer thing tho, sorry!Health Question & Answer

You should go to an oral surgeon who would put you under for this. But if your dentist is decent you should not feel a great deal of pain. Those teeth are much more difficult to extract or can be at least. Really it should not hurt. The shot to deaden the pain hurt me the most.Health Question & Answer

I had my wisdom teeth cut out like 2 years ago. I let them put me to sleep first. I never thought the pain from it was excruciating. I believe my orthodontists told me not to wear my retainer for a while but I can't really remember.Health Question & Answer

Its not bad at all! As long as you take your medicine you won't feel any pain! And about a week later you can wear your retainer, as soon as the swelling goes down.Health Question & Answer

I understand where you are coming from- I had all 4 wisdom teeth pulled at the same time. If you are so worried about the pain I would definitely ask to be put to sleep. You won't feel anything throughout the procedure, and you get great painkillers (Vicodin) and my surgeon even gave me valium to help me relax.

As for afterwards, I don't really know what to tell you. I was a serious case and had to have all 4 pulled in emergency because they all abcessed and I almost died, and I was in serious pain because of the infection, but the Vicodin took care of it. Since this is not the case for you and you are healthy, I think you will have smooth sailing and will not be a big deal at all.

Take a deep breath and be calm. People go through this all the time =)Health Question & Answer
