Here's what happens, interspersed with some advice:

During the banding, they will put a lip spreader in your mouth to keep your lips out of the way - so I strongly suggest you use a lot of lip gloss first to keep your lips moist! Take a bottle of water with you too, the first thing you'll want to do once they're done is have a huge drink of water.

Next, if you need molar bands (not everyone does), they will size the bands by trying them on your teeth one by one till they find the right fit. This part is very uncomfortable but does not last long. Once they have the right size, they will cement the bands on, which does not hurt at all.

Once your molar bands are sorted, they will lightly polish your teeth and put an etching solution on them to roughen up the surface a little. This takes just a couple of minutes and they'll then rise it off.

Once they've done this, they'll cement the brackets on with dental glue, one by one. After about 4 have been put on, they will set the glue with a strong light (I think it's UV). They'll continue to do this until all your teeth are braced.

Finally, they will insert the archwire through the slots in the brackets. If you've got self ligating braces, they'll just close the trap in the bracket, if you have normal braces, they'll put tiny bands around the bracket to hold the archwire in place.

All in all this process takes about half an hour to an hour from start to finish (depending on how easy your teeth are to reach), so it's super quick and entirely painless!

A lot of people say to take some pain relief before hand, but the pain doesn't kick in until a couple of hours after the process so I wouldn't recommend taking the ibuprofen until you've left the office, or at all unless you really start to feel uncomfortable. I've not personally noticed any pain worth taking anything for.

Other than that, make sure you have a little tooth brushing kit ready to take to school or work, and that you have some dental wax ready in case it starts to rub. also make sure that you have some easy to eat food in the house.

Food wise, I eat everything with a knife and fork (yes, even toast!). The main reason for this is that it lets me cut the food nice and small, meaning I can eat a wider variety of foods, and also I find that it keeps the braces cleaner, which is important to me. Always carry a mirror so you can check after eating for 'left overs'!.

DO NOT eat popcorn of any sort - nuts etc. are also off the menu. Basically anything hard or chewy should be avoided. Personally I find bread hard to eat too, but toasted is fine. Stuffed pasta, like ravioli is great for the first few days while you get used to the new hardware. I do chew gum, even though I was told not to. This is because some orthos do recommend it as it helps speed up the process - however it should always be sugar free. This isn't because sugar makes it sticky (load of rubbish - these days gum is not sticky due to new formulas!) but because with braces, your teeth are harder to clean and the sugar can cause decay.

Good luck!Health Question & Answer

You don't need to worry about any shots at the ortho. What they will do is cement the the bracets to your teeth and then place the wire in them and cover it with a rubber band around each individual bracket. If you have any pin or t-pins, they will put it in then as well. If you need to wear rubber bands they will show you how the place them on and where they need to be placed.

There will be pain for about a week to two weeks. I'm not going to lie, it hurts. I cried every time they changed my wire. Take some OTC pain meds about 1/2 an hour before they do the procedure. Say Goodbye to gum, sticky foods, hard candies, and taking bites out of hard veggies. The Ortho will also give you handouts about what you can and can't eat.Health Question & Answer

No shots. Don't worry. It depends on what orthodontist you go to. But they will take impressions of your teeth, x-rays, pictures, and all of that. They then put your braces on and tell you all about brushing and what you can and can't eat.Health Question & Answer

heyy !
I had braced for just about 2 years or so.
You CANT have:
GUM!
Eat a whole apple if you want an apple it has to be cut up
NO nuts(but i had themXD)
well your orthodontist should give you a list of stuff

Now to get them on takes around an hour or something like that the measure were the middle of your teeth are then put this nasty tasting glue on then use a blue light to make the glue stay on and then you get to choose colours(maybe)

yeah after u get them on it will hurt but make sure to take tylenol or something like that it will hurt for a day or depending on how much tyleonol you take..any more questions add me

love to help

wen i got mine, they just cleaned mi teeth REALLY good, like they used this sandy thing 2 scrub anything off, and it does taste bad. then they put some gel stuff on it, u get 2 go rinse. time 2 the bands, i had 2 get some bands put on my teeth in back, do that my braces stay on, and those are little silver things that like cover ut entire tooth.

after that was done, the brackets got glued on, and the glue does NOT taste good, so dont lick it xD lol. um. once those are done, they will get a wire 2 fit and then u may get 2 pick out colors, but some places dont want u 2 have colors the 1st time. but idk. then ur done =D

u cant eat anything chewy OR super hard, like dont take a bite out of a whole apple, or dont chew on gum, or starbursts. ive done those, and mi braces end up breaking which means that i gotta go back and get them fixed.

so. best of luck =DDHealth Question & Answer

No shots involved! :)

1. they might take moulds and xrays
2. if you had spacers they take them out and put bands in (really really painful!!)
3. they put this gross etchant on your teeth
4. they glue the braces on
5. wire in
6. pick some colours.

Not really a big deal. It's painful after.

I eat whatever I want..Health Question & Answer
