Whats the difference between mouthwash with alcohol and w/o alcohol in it?!

Question: Whats the difference between mouthwash with alcohol and w/o alcohol in it.?
I've read mouthwashes w/alcohol and lead to oral cancer on wiki...?

Why does it have alcohol in the first place; should I switch to
non-alcohol mouthwashes from now on.?Health Question & Answer

Alcahol acts as a disinfectant... that's why it burns. It's killing all the bacteria in your mouth. Alcahol free uses a different agent for disinfecting your mouth that's probably less reliable than Alcahol. I'd just go with original listerine, unless the burn is a little too much. After a few days, it dosent hurt very much because the days of using it have acted like napalm against bacteria.

Wait a minute... you can get DRUNK.?!.? Oh, hang on a sec... NO SH|T.Health Question & Answer

Alcohol acts as the antibacterial in the rinse. I highly doubt (and have not heard yet) of anyone using a mouthrinse to get drunk. The difference from an oral hygiene aspect is that the rinses that contain alcohol can dry out your mouth (a temporary decrease in salivary flow). Why that is relevant.? Because less saliva increases risks for cavities. Note that you'd have to use ALOT of the mouthrinse and use it ALL the time for this to occur. As for the oral cancer affects, your chances are greater exponentially when chewing tobacco or smoking compared to using a rinse.Health Question & Answer

mouthwashes with alcohol MAY be linked to oral cancer but it is not proven yet.

mouthwash has alcohol in it because pure alcohol will kill germs. (this is why it burns)

non alcoholic mouthwashes will do the same thing, but since they don't have alcohol in them they actually contain more chemicals.

it's more of a personal choice. depending on if you want the possibility of oral cancer or the possibility of ingesting harmful chemicals.Health Question & Answer

w/alcohol kills more germs, though also has greater incidence of killing the actual cells in your mouth as well. w/o alcohol has less powerful antiseptic properties, but is kinder on one's oral tissue. My opinion as to which = best.? Kinda like brushing one's teeth too hard sorta defeats the purpose in that it injures the mouth... chose w/o alcohol formulas, use as directed as part of a min. twice daily routine.Health Question & Answer

Mouthwash with alcohol burns, without doesn't.
It was thought that alcohol was a good antiseptic. The other was to provide a base for the solution. I don't know of another reason.
The choice is up to you if you prefer not to have the burning when you rinse. But Listerine people swear by their rinse, if you can swish if for one minute you are germ free and it is claimed that Listerine helps fight and prevent colds and sore throat.Health Question & Answer

I personally use the Crest kind that has no alcohol in it. Here is a few links why alcohol in mouthwash is bad.
