What was your root canal experience?!

Question: What was your root canal experience.?
I have to have a root canal today on tooth number 19. I had a root canal when I was pregnant, and they couldn't give me regular numbing stuff or a good pain reliever. It was really a terrible experience. Now that I'm not pregnant I'm hoping it won't be as bad.

So can you tell me,
1. How long it takes on average.?
2. What do they prescribe for pain afterwards.?
3. Anything else I should know.?Health Question & Answer

Well when I got a root canal I was in the 6th grade and I remember I went in on a monday and they had to remove the tooth to let the other one grow. They gave me anesthesia (Sp.?) and everything turned into a cartoon. The doctor's turned into human shaped blobs and started singing in some strange alien language. Then everything went black and I don't know what happened next because it felt like it lasted only a minute. Then I woke up and everything was still loopy and heard my doctor say, "And squeeze, in a squeaky weird voice. He was holding my hand so I squeezed his hand. We did that a couple time until everything was back to normal. My parents appeared they were all blah blah blah and then we left. I was walking weird cause I was dizzy so they took me in a wheelchair to my car. also they put some sort of gum on it to protect the area and I had to wear that for a week or 2.Health Question & Answer

They are pretty good at it "nowadays"

I have had three in my lifetime, one in the 70's took about 6 trips and was a bit painful at times.

The next took two trips, was in pain before but had little pain during the trips. I eventually lost that tooth.

The last one was about a year ago. One trip, the most uncomfortable part was some of the fluid trickling down my throat and with that rubber shield on the tooth, I couldn't swallow or spit! It took about an hour and a half, and I had no pain later.

The pain factor will be dependent on your tolerance level. In each of the last two, I was prescribed what I call industrial strength Tylenol, but didn't have it filled. The bit of pain I had was bearable. I was given an antibiotic in all cases. The first one was abscessed, the second cracked to the root, and the third had a cavity to the nerve, so I guess that made a difference in them.

The most painful part for me was paying for it! I do not have dental insurance, and the last tooth cost right at $2400.00 with the canal work and crown! That is a ridiculous price, but I guess you have no other choice.

There are much worse things to endure than a root canal though! Good Luck.

Oh BTW, nice legs.Health Question & Answer

Well i use to hear it was bad...They numbed me and it was bout a hour maybe a little over...But it was painless and was surprised it was so easy and painless...Getting your teeth cleaned may be more annoying that a root canal these days...Health Question & Answer
