Yes they can. Retainers are usually a life long commitment. Your teeth are constantly moving through out your life time. But again, there is no guarantee that they will go back exactly the same. Many times DDS will extract those 4 teeth so that your remaining teeth have room to shift into place so that they are all straight and functional. Wow. I don't understand why they had to pull your teeth at all. Is it due to overcrowding.? That is something that is very, very last resort. Either that or you had a bad dentist. Amazingly enough some modern dentists still do that.
I've had really bad teeth and had to have braces but honestly they never pulled my teeth. Even now I have level 1 mobility in my teeth and my dentist says I can maintain level 1 mobility for the rest of my life as long as I take care of my teeth. There is no need to pull them.

dental people are so annoying, every time i go for a checkup (which is like for 5 minutes) they charge like $200. And i do not think you will notice the gaps after not wearing the retainer, though you will have to wear it for quite some time.Health Question & Answer
if you still have gaps then your orthodontic procedure was not complete. the retainers basically keeps your teeth in place so that the spaces do not open. you will need to cont. your orthodontic treatment in order to close those gaps.Health Question & Answer
The gaps you have shouldn't come back after you get the braces taken off.
But it is possible if you take them off too early.
