Americans spend hundreds of dollars on straightening and whitening their teeth. Their teeth aren't 'good' as in 'healthy' - they just look pretty because they've had a lot of money spent on them due to vanity.
The British often have better dental health than Americans - dentistry is part of the National Health Service in Britain. The money they get from taxes is considered to be better spent on keeping teeth healthy than on purely cosmetic treatments. So a British person might have crooked teeth whereas an American's might be straight, but the British person's will be healthy teeth that will last a lifetime whereas the American's just look good, and may well fall out in later life.

Flouride in everything (not as great as they make it sound), dental work and braces available, and vanity. A lot of people whiten their teeth (some to the point of damaging their teeth) or even get veneers put over top of their teeth. While veneers are good for some people who really have a hard time with how their teeth look, most people don't really need them, and get them to look "perfect." Oh! I agree with many of the answers. One other reason is that dentists have been very active in trying to prevent dental disease. As an example is the use of fluoride in the water and other ways to drastically reduce cavities, and regular preventive visits to keep the gums healthy.Health Question & Answer
