Answers:
A root canal is a treatment used to repair and save a tooth that is badly decayed or becomes infected.

How it is done:

Step 1
A member of the dental team will place a rubber dam around the tooth. This dam protects the tooth from germs in your saliva while the work is being done.

Step 2
Your dentist or endodontist may give you "freezing" (or anesthetic). In some cases, anesthetic is not needed.

Step 3
Your dentist or endodontist will make a small opening in the tooth to reach the root canal system and the damaged pulp.

Step 4
Your dentist will take out the pulp by cleaning and enlarging the root canal system with very fine dental tools (or instruments).

Step 5
Then he or she will fill and seal the root canal with a rubber-like material (called guttapercha) after it has been cleaned.

Step 6
Your dentist or endodontist will seal the opening of the tooth with either a temporary or permanent filling.Health Question & Answer

It is the process of removing the nerve.
Inside the pulp chamber is the nerve and when it becomes infected or compromised in some way the end result is almost always need for a root canal.
Your dentist will determine this by several tests on the tooth, such as sensitivity to cold etc, check for breaks, decay etc that has compromised the chamber and then set up a treatment plan.
He/she will first apply a topical anistetic to your gums and after that has a moment to numb they then will give you several injections which you may feel a bit depending how badly infected the tooth is.
After that has had time to take effect they will open the canal by removing the outer layers of the tooth in a tunnel fashion straight down through the biting surface.
Once they can see into the channel they will begin removing the nerve.
Sometimes it comes out all at once, but not often.
They will stop periodically to take xrays to check the progress.
What they are aiming to do is completely clean out the chamber and at the same time not compromise the intergrity of the tooth.
Sometimes this can take more then one appointment.
Since it is often a tiring proceedure if you feel you may have trouble staying open ask the doc for a mouth prop- it's a rubber block that allows you to rest your jaw as well as not bite the Doc.
Once the nerve is removed there is no nutrition being taken to the tooth and it becomes like cut wood dry and brittle.
It is vital that you folow through with a crown to protect the tooth.Health Question & Answer

* First, the dentist will numb your gums with a substance that feels like jelly. After your gums are numb, the dentist will inject a local anesthetic that will completely numb the teeth, gums, tongue, and skin in that area. Sometimes nitrous oxide gas will be used to reduce pain and help you relax.
* The dentist may separate the decayed tooth from the other teeth with a small sheet of rubber on a metal frame. This protective rubber sheet also helps stop liquid and tooth chips from entering your mouth and throat.
* The dentist will use a drill and other tools to remove the pulp from the tooth and will fill the inside part of the tooth below the gum line with medicines, temporary filling materials, and a final root canal filling.
* After the root canal, a permanent filling or crown (cap) is often needed. If a crown is needed, the dentist removes the decay, and then makes an impression of the tooth. A technician uses the impression to make a crown that perfectly matches the drilled tooth.
* The tooth may be fitted with a temporary crown until the permanent crown is made and cemented into place.Health Question & Answer

your teeth have roots that go into your bone and hold them in place, inside these roots is a nerve that keeps your tooth alive, when bacteria eats it's way into the nerve it cannot be saved and they go in and remove it, this is a root canal, after they do it your tooth will have no more feeling. it usually involves a lot of pain because it can be hard to numb the root, it also takes a couple hours of time in the chair with lots of drilling and they also put a bunch of different size files down deep to get all of the nerve material. If they miss any, like say the very tip because your root was longer than their tool, it will rot later on and cause huge pain and swelling, then you have to go see a specialist with special tools to get the last bit out. Lastly they are expensive, usually a thousand dollars or more, and then you will need a crown, there goes another 1200 bucks.Health Question & Answer

A root canal is usually a 5 step process. In the first step, the dentist drills holes in your tooth and applies a substance that kills the roots. On the next visit, the dentist removes the roots (more drilling) and drills a hole into your jaw bone and cements in a steel post. On the next visit, the dentist checks the post to make sure it is in secure, gives you a temporary cap and casts a mold for your real crown. On the 4th visit the dentist removes the temporary cap and inserts the real crown. You wear it for a week with out cement to make sure it fits. On the last visit, they dentist will, if necessary, file the crown down to give a better fit, and then cement it to the post in your mouth. It is a painful process, but for me it was not as bad as I was told it would be...a few asprin did the trick.Health Question & Answer
