Can the dental office really do this?!

Question: Can the dental office really do this.?
My new dentist has suggested that I get a descaling/deep cleaning procedure that I don't need. I just went to this new dentist for emergency care and now she wants me to spend another $500. The office is refusing to schedule me for a regular cleaning unless I consent to this expensive and painful procedure. The new DDS doesn't even have my old records yet and i looked up periodontal disease. I don't really have the symptoms. I have two spots on the my lower gums that tend to bleed when I floss because of the crooked teeth. My gums are sentive when I mensturate but during the other 3 weeks I'm fine. Anyway I'm pissed. Can an office legally refuse to schedule a regular cleaning unless you get a descaling.?
I'll already looking into other offices in the area. I don't exactly trust this doctor. Unfortunateloy I'm already partly into a root canal/crown on a old filling that broke so I have to get it finished.Health Question & Answer

some dental offices are messed up. if i was you i would look for a new dentist. my friends a dental hygienist and she tells me all of the messed up things that some of her past doctors would do and she didn't approve of (which is why she no longer works for them) but some dentists have a quota to meet every month and they will just tell you that you need work done when you really don't. and how they will not change there gloves after working on different patients even when they knew of diseases that the previous patient had. its disgusting! make sure you have a good dentist!Health Question & Answer

They can not legally refuse to schedule a regular cleaning unless you get a descaling. I suggest you fix the root canal and then switch dentists. Even if you take some sort of action and stay with them, they will treat you worse indirectly in the future. You should switch dentists.Health Question & Answer

Finish the root canal, but try to find another dentist for the cleaning and any future work. They can't force you to have any procedure, they can only recommend. They're trying to force you and that's not appropriate.Health Question & Answer

Some offices have a policy that if you don't follow their recommendations they will not treat you. Our office makes recommendations and if the patient refuses treatment, has to sign a paper saying that they were told this is what they should have done. They refuse treatment and only want this done. This frees us up from future liability if and when things get worse. The patient can't come back and say "You never told me that and what would happen if I didn't do it." So in your case we would do a regular cleaning for you. The larger point is if you don't have faith or trust the dentist seek a second opinion and another dentist you feel more comfortable with.Health Question & Answer
