Had a cleaning yesterday but my mouth seems awfully sensitive?!

Question: Had a cleaning yesterday but my mouth seems awfully sensitive.?
Yesterday I went to the dentist to have both a cavity filled and a cleaning. It had been several years since I had either done and the filling didn't seem nearly as painful as the cleaning. The lady took this probe and stuck into far into my gums she had said that she was determining if I was in the early stages of periodontal disease. After hearing quite a few fours I became concerned she just told me that she had people who had worse gums than I. I didn't know anything about periodontal disease, and she told me that if the gum is at depth four they don't generally go in and clean the plaque and such out. She also told me I needed to floss on a regular basis and this will help. Well, I have been brushing my teeth after every meal, and flossing too is this more harmful because my gums hurt real bad when I eat or is this part of the cleaning. In other words will my gums toughen up are they just sore because they are in rough shape from my neglect.Health Question & Answer

Answers:
gum disease happens over time generally from leaving plaque between teeth to start. The probings were done to determine where you are gum health wise. Readings of .5 to 3 are considered healthy. Readings of 4 usually mean inflammation. 5 and up is irreversible disease. Inflammation can be controlled and reduced with good brushing and flossing. If you hadn't flossed before your cleaning, then the gums are usually swollen and sensitive afterwards. Rinsing with warm salt water will help bring the swelling down. If you started flossing more than once a day, then that is probably adding to the sensitivity. If you keep at it, the pain will go away. It's like someone who starts working out. Their muscles are usually sore at first, but with time, they just get healthier.
Keep it up!!Health Question & Answer

I wouldn't really be too worried about it. I just had a cleaning today, and my gums are swollen in one part, and i rarely floss, and some of my gums have receded down a bit. The dentist still cleaned the plack on my teeth and didn't mention anything about my gums. All he told me was to begin flossing daily. Once your gums have started to inflame, you need to just floss so you don't let it get worse, or it takes more time for it to get worse.Health Question & Answer

Stick with it. It is very important to floss and brush everyday. Your gums will get used to it after a couple weeks and they will no longer be sore whenever you do this. And your mouth will also feel a lot cleaner.Health Question & Answer

Brushing too much is more harm than good...brush once in the morning and once before bed; not after every meal. You can always use listerine after lunch if you want. I would also ease into the flossing since your gums might be sensitive to it. Having a lot of 4's is really bad...but I am glad this has encouraged you to take better care. Oh yeah, also don't brush too hard because that can really irritate your gums, and switch to a soft-bristle brush if you aren't already using one.Health Question & Answer

The hygienist was measuring the depth of your "gum pockets". This is a routine part of a complete cleaning and exam. If your pockets are too deep, they trap food particles and bacteria, and become sore and diseased. Then they get even deeper and the condition gets worse. One treatment is to have a specially-trained dental technician "plane" the gunk off the roots of your teeth, which is a pretty uncomfortable process. The ultimate solution is to go to a specialist who trims the loose gum tissue away to minimize the pockets. This is expensive!

The hygienist probably showed you the correct way to floss. It's normal for your gums to be a little sore after a thorough cleaning, especially if it's been a while. They should feel better in a day or two.

Keep up the good work with your brushing and flossing, and get your teeth professionally cleaned twice a year. You don't want your gum condition to get any worse!Health Question & Answer

Your gums are a little tender from the probing and the cleaning done on your teeth. This will go away in a couple of days. 2 and 3 measurements are considered normal. If you heard a lot of 4's that was telling you that you were beginning to develop some gum problems. But usually at this stage the problem will be corrected by good brushing and flossing. If you heard 5's or 6's then a more aggressive approach is taken. This is called deep scaling or root planning. Good luckHealth Question & Answer
