Question: I chipped a tooth 6 months ago and it started hurting a couple days ago. I have no job or insurance what 2 do.?
I've already had the wisdom tooth and next molar on that side pulled so I really don't want to lose it too (down to 2 molars on bottom) and the chipped one isn't even the one farthest back. What's the cheapest way to stop the pain and deterioration till I can afford a crown.? Can't they just do a filling ( I don't care about cosmetics) What's a root canal anyway, and why do they do them.? I called the University dental school and it was $135 just to say Hi, and a crown was going to be $1,700+. Ouch!Health Question & Answer

Wow! What dental school is that.? My outside office fee is only 1300... do I need to raise my fees.? I'm in the San Francisco Bay area, which is a pretty expensive place to be.
Get the tooth checked and diagnosed. Even if it eventually needs a crown, a filling can usually be done as a longterm temporary patch.Health Question & Answer

just so you know a root canal is what you get when you have a very very deep cavity. but back to your problem, it is best to get it fixed, but it'll cost you, the longer you leave it, the worst it'll get and the worst it'll get the more they have to do to your teeth, and the more it'll cost so its better to get it fixed now than later. also, the crown isn't absolutely necessary, its just for just in case, because sometimes the tooth may crack after you get a root canal,Health Question & Answer

Call around - sometimes they can do a repair on a tooth and rebuild it using that white filling material. Call around. also see if there is a dental school around where you live.Health Question & Answer

My daughter had a very similar problem. Unfortunately there is no good news for you -

Since you chipped a tooth, you traumatized the pulp area inside where the nerve is. Since it started hurting a couple of months later, it suggests that you probably have got an infection starting inside the tooth. A root canal goes in and removes the nerve and pulp and replaces it with a rubbery compound. Ignore this and the tooth will absess and you will probably lose it. You will also need to get the crack fixed and/or crown on the tooth which is another cost entirely. The root canal is a result of your waiting unfortunately.

Sorry, I feel your pain, Dentists are EXPENSIVE!Health Question & Answer
