The way that you say that makes me real nervous to respond. I mean, what do you mean over weight.? Can you give us some height/weight numbers to go on.? I'm really not trying to bust on you, but I don't really know whether you are 5ft 10, 200 lbs and 70 over weight or 4 ft 4, 97 lbs with a horrible body image... I know, what difference does that make.? Simple answer, in the former case I would advise the way the others have, drink water, choose the best (healthiest) things on the table, try to take and eat only a small portion of the thing that your tongue craves (if its sugar/fat, after two bites your tongue will be sated and you can move on to healthier choices). It's not about depriving yourself of the foods you enjoy but simply limiting the amount of high-fat/sugar foods and replacing them with healthier options.
If on the other hand, you are over 4 feet tall and under 100 lbs, losing weight is not what you need, a better self image is. Talk to your doctor about what a "good weight" for someone your size should be along with any health concerns he has with regard to your diet/weight..
