Is wanting to join a gym being selfish?!

Question: Is wanting to join a gym being selfish.?
As a wife and mother my world revolves around my family. And I don't mind at all. It's just that I've gained so much weight and I've started taking blood pressure meds. So I've started a diet and I'm doing well, but I think I'd do so much better if I could exercise. Walking where I live could get me ran over so I don't exercise at all. I'd like to join a gym even though I don't know how much they cost. I feel guilty already because I have to eat different (more expensive) food than my family, so the thought of spending a lot on a gym membership really makes me feel selfish. That money could go to other things. Do you think I'm being selfish for wanting to join a gym.? Does anyone know how much they should cost.? Do you have to sign a contract.? Do any of you have a good arguement I could use when trying to convince my husband that I really need to do this.? Thank You.Health Question & Answer

The fact that your on blood pressure meds alone is a sign that you need to exercise. This is not selfish at all. Actually your doing your family a favor. The cost of being unhealthy in the long run is far more that a membership to the gym. You could try getting a family membership to the YMCA. Your whole family could be involved then. You could work out as you want and they could be doing their own thing. They have many different activities for children and of course the POOL which they will love. It is pricey I believe . Maybe 600-700 a year. But its worth it in the long run!!!!Health Question & Answer

I don't think you are being selfish at all. Taking care of yourself is good not only for you, but it sets a good example for your children, and it will probably keep mommy around for a lot longer.
It depends on the gym, at 24 hr. fitness you can get month to month contracts and they have deals pretty often so its not too expensive. If that doesn't work for you and you have a YMCA around its usually pretty affordable there.Health Question & Answer

Your own health should be one of your top priorities, you shouldn't have to argue with your husband, joining a gym is good for your physical health and your mental health, it makes you look and feel good.
Just tell your husband and your family that you need this, they should understand, i'm not sure the cost but i'm sure its well worth it.
But you deserve to look and feel great.
Good Luck!! :)

Wanting to join a gym should make you feel anything but selfish. Your just wanting a healthier life style. Im a member of a gym and its like $38 a month. I think its a little expensive because i rarely go but if your going to be committed to it then why not.?Health Question & Answer

Oh no no no not at all. Mommy's need some pampering too whether it's a gym or even a haircut once in awhile. You are not selfish one bit!
Some gyms don't require contracts so you might have to do some research on which ones to go to.

When you are healthy you are happy, and joining a gym will definitely make you healthier. It will give you more energy during the day and help you sleep better at night. Health Question & Answer

I don't think you're being selfish at all. It sounds like you spend all of your time looking after your family, you should be able to do something for yourself once in a while too :)Health Question & Answer

The average cost for a membership is about $50/month. No, you aren't being selfish. A fit and happy woman means a more pleasant wife and mom! Health Question & Answer

of course not
and while you're at it, get to the spa tooHealth Question & Answer

You have to talk to your family about the cost. I mean, if it is going to be taking something away from your kids, like school supplies, or food, or clothing, or whatever, then yes it would be selfish.
But if your family can afford it, the gym will pay for itself in savings on doctor's visits later on due to obesity or depression etc.
the younger you start exercising the better your old age will be. Plus your mental health is something you need to take care of and working out is proven to be very good for your mind.
You will have more stamina and your mind will be sharper, which in turn helps your family.
You usually have to sign a contract. In my experience it has usually been a year long.
My gym cost about fifty dollars a month.
I have friends who use the YWCA; they say that is pretty cheap.

I've been around for a while and seen a few things in my day.

If you hang around "old" people you will find the thing they talk the most about is health. The people who have been on this planet the longest and have been through a lot of hardships... something to think about.

That being said (and I'm sure you'll see this coming) health IS the most important thing in your life. Without your health you can't take care of your family, you can't work and make money, you can't live a balanced lifestyle and keeps your mind in tact.

If you want to prolong your lifespan, feel more energy, look better, feel better, and have a new outlook on life then you can't afford NOT to workout/eat properly and take care of yourself. It is as far from selfish as you can get.

It might not be a good idea. Gyms cost somewhere from $30 to $60 a month, and yes, you would have to sign a contract. I go to the gym 3 or 4 times a week, but unlike you I have no family or other obligations for my time. And here's the thing: I see new members being signed up every day, but the place never gets any more crowded! Why is that.? Because most people sign up, come twice, and that's it. So how guilty will you feel when you've spent a couple of hundred dollars for nothing.?

Is there a park or even a shopping mall where you could walk.? Or just start by parking at the end of the lot when you drive to the grocery store, instead of looking for the closest spot. Try to fit some extra walking into your regular activities.
