Cardio is short for cardiovascular.
Cardio exercise is going to be any exercise that will elevate your heart rate. Depending on your current fitness level, this can range from a brisk walk, swimming, jump rope, bicycling, sports, exercise classes (Tae Bo, spin, etc...). The best method is using a heart rate monitor but you can also use a perceived exertion level. By this, if you are just past the edge of not being able to easily hold a conversation, this is a good starting point. If you get a heart rate monitor, first calculate you maximum heart rate and then try to stay in a range of 70% - 80% of your target heart rate. Most of the heart rate monitors have a low and high alarm that can be set to help with this.
A quick a dirty way to find this range is as follows:
1. Maximum heart rate (MHR): 220 - your age
2. Find your resting heart rate (RHR) as soon as you wake up (average over a few mornings)
3. Heart Rate Reserve (MHRr): MHR - RHR
4. 70% of MHRr: MHRr * 0.7
5. 80% of MHRr: MHRr * 0.8
Good luck!!
