Is running at 5 mph on the treadmill a good work out?!

Question: Is running at 5 mph on the treadmill a good work out.?
would you say that 5 mph when trying to lose weight is too slow.?.?.?.? if you dont think 5 mph is a good speed can you recommend a good speedHealth Question & Answer

Answers:
Work out with your heart rate in the fat-burning zone. : 60-70% of your maximum heart rate (60-75% if you're better conditioned).
HERE'S THE SIMPLE FORMULA TO DETERMINE IF YOU'RE RUNNING AT A "GOOD SPEED": Subtract your age from 220 to find your max heart rate. Take this # & multiply by .60---> this is the minimum heart rate you should maintain while performing your physical activity. THEN take your MAX heart rate & multiply it by .70--> the upper range for maximal fat burning.
EXAMPLE (40 yr old person):
220-40=180 (max heart rate)
180x.60=108 (lower limit of minimal fat-burning range)
180x.70=126 (upper limit of maximal fat-burning range)
As you can see, the answer to your question is different for everyone depending on the person's age, the level of your conditioning and how fast your heart is beating. This is the best answer to your question because the rate that your heart is going while exercise is what truly determines results. I hope you do the math and it helps. It surely cleared this up for me when I wondered the same thing. ;-) Health Question & Answer

A number of factors need to be considered in answering this. If you are not very fit and have lots of pounds to drop, that may well be plenty. 5 mph is more than a very brisk walk for most people and would be a jogging pace for many who are trying to lose weight.
Another factor is whether you can handle 5 mph for an extended time. Can you handle that and keep up a conversation and last for at least 20 minutes.? How long you can last is a bigger indication of fitness than speed is. See what it takes to last 20 minutes at that or any other speed that is manageable and then look to work up towards 30 minutes gradually.Health Question & Answer

for body recomposition.? NO

a better example of a running routine that would help lose weight.?

Monday: Sprint day, where you start at 20 minutes of 50 second jog/10 second sprint pace for week one, then 45:15 split for week two, 40: 20 split on week 3, 35:25 split on week 4 and finally a 30:30 split on week 5. Then, after this you would add 5 minutes to your total time e going back to the 50: 10 split and continuiing on in this manner.

Wednesday: Hills, find a hill thats at least at a 45% incline and nice and long and sprint up it as fast as possible jogging back down repeat 4 times...believe me that one isn't as easy as it migt seem if you pick an hill that actually offerrs challenge. Adding one time up the hill each week.

Friday: try a 40 minute run/jog fast enough to challenge yourself
week 2 add 5 minutes
week 3 add 5 minutes
until you hit 1 hour

Lifting weights also would help.... deadlifts are an excellent exercise to strengthen the muscles involved in running
Health Question & Answer

it's more about heart rate than speed. your "ideal" heart rate is 220 - your age. if you can stay at or near this "ideal" heart rate for a half hour, that's considered a good workout. as for what speed that is...that depends on you. i like to vary my speeds. start really high to get my heart rate up, then go a little slower until it starts to drop and go back up again. but really, it's whatever works for you.
