Overweight, back pain walking treadmill?!

Question: Overweight, back pain walking treadmill.?
I am overweight and tired of it so I'm taking off pounds. I walk the treadmill for an hour and as soon as I get on it I have really sharp pains in the lower back so bad that I have to "lean over" to even walk. This is from the second I get on there. I am over 50 pounds overweight could it be my stomach is weakening my back.?

Thanks!Health Question & Answer

yes! your right on the money! Having excess weight especially in the abdomen/stomach area causes you lots of lower back pain! Do exercises to tone up your abdomen as well, like crunches or pushups and stuff like that. After doing that for a while, it actually makes your stomach go in since its alot stronger, know what i mean.? makes it look like you lost weight lol, thats why it makes me happy. but yes! i was about 50 lbs over weight and on a treadmill and had the same problem, so i would first do crunches and girl pushups at first, on the knees, and then do the treadmill, and after a few weeks my back hurt less and less, and then eventually not at all. :D

Good luck! i hope you have success in your weight loss!

Edit - I hope your back gets better! But exercising your abdomen will start to eliminate your back problems, as well as make your gut appear to "shrink" since your ab's are keeping the fat together in a more well placed position instead of just hangin there, know what i mean.? message me if you have any questions!Health Question & Answer

it is a combination of the excess weight, poor posture, and weak stomach muscles ... the stomach muscles are part of the "core body" and give a LOT of support to the lower back ...

have you considered a back brace or consultation with a physical therapist to determine the best and safest way to build up your core body strength.? could be worth looking into ...

you could also have some arthritis in your lower back (I do and I am active and at a healthy weight, so it is not a critical thing to say and a very common ailment to occur, even at a young age) ... targeted PT exercises and anti-inflamatories can help, here, too ...Health Question & Answer

Hi there... perhaps your core may be not strong enough to support your back muscle structure. The core is responsible for anchoring our backs so it may be helpful to begin gently by strengthening the core region which then will help minimize/eliminate the lower back pain while walking on the treadmill.

Here are some easy core exercises to get you started:

Most treadmills have a slight incline, even at the lowest setting. If you're having that much pain, perhaps walking on even ground (outside) would be better for you. Yes, your back muscles will be weak if you haven't actively been conditioning them. Even people who aren't overweight can have weak back muscles.Health Question & Answer

Targetted weight reduction is quite hard, some peeple would declare impossible, but I worked off 2 inches from my waistline by following the instruction on the web portal in the box below. Give it a try, their information is very sensible!Health Question & Answer
