Answers:
Sitting or standing depends on the exercise and what you are trying to get out of it.

If you are sitting then its usually harder to cheat on the exercise and use other muscles. For instance, if you are doing dumbbell shoulder presses then standing would let you bounce with your legs to help get the weight up.

On the flip side, standing means that you have to work your core out while you are exercising which makes it a better workout.

Since 20 lb dumbbells are too heavy, you can probably do standing and get a better workout.

As for how long; it depends on your fitness goals. In a gym setting you'd have a huge selection of dumbbells so I'd tell you to pick a weight that you can only do 8 to 12 reps with and then stop when you fail. Since you only have 1 set of weights then you should do one or two warmup sets and stop before you feel the burn or fail. And then do one or two sets to failure. Or until you get bored if you are pretty strong . =)Health Question & Answer

Usually you just do a certain number of sets with a certain number of reps. Ex: 3x8 (3 sets of 8 reps)

Say you're doing just regular dumbbell curls. You would do 3 sets of 8 reps for each arm (so that would be a total of 16 each set). When you feel a burn in your arms (or whatever you're lifting with), it means that its tearing the muscle inside the body parts being worked, which allows more blood to pump to that area and repair it, creating more muscle. In other words, the burning is completely normal, and its okay if you keep going, that's how you get better.

Just remember to take a short break in between each set (1-2 minutes). This will help your muscles develop better.

And as for HOW to lift, its probably best to talk to the P.E. or weights teacher at your school, or a personal trainer at a gym.

This question is really weird, I don't know what the thought process of you or your boyfriend's is. also, what your boyfriend "knows" isn't true. There is so little information, this question cannot be answered.

Some stupid people you are.Health Question & Answer

You usually have to pick some weights that you can only do about 10-15 reps. If he wants to build muscle then he should use heavy weights, if he wants to tone his arms he should use lighter.Health Question & Answer
