Is swimming overrated as an exercise?!

Question: Is swimming overrated as an exercise.?
I notice, at the university pool, the swimmers are either too chubby or too thin.

The chubby ones (some are just plain fat) have buoyancy and there's little or no sweating in the pool, so I'm not sure if this is as good an exercise for them as running would be -- where there's sweat and they have to fight gravity.

The thin ones seem to have little tone.

I was a great swimmer when younger, but rarely do it now and instead run and lift weights, which seem to have a more noticeable affect. After swimming, I just feel all mushy after.

I love to swim. It just feels clean and refreshing to dive into a blue pool and take some laps. Plus I feel like I actually got some great exercise. I think it's a great sport for overweight or obese people as well because it can be as gentle or rough as you make it. Health Question & Answer

No. Its not overrated and its one of the most healthiest. Swimmers may not have gravity but they have resistance which is harder then the running, most professional runners use resistance like parachutes in order to get a better workout.

Swimmers also avoid heavy impact on the joints, they are less likely to have injuries versus a runner who has constant impact on the ground, which can cause joint pain.

If regular swimming is not working on you then add weights to swimming, most professional swimmers use a wide variety of pool weighted and paddle equipment to further impact their muscles and resistance in the water, creating a harder and more efficient workout.Health Question & Answer

Swimming is great Aerobic exercise, which helps you in keep cardiovascular system in healthy condition and also reduce weight. Yes it is a fact that chubby people can remain afloat easily simply because of their low density.

I absolutely do not think swimming is overrated.Only other exercise which can be compared with swimming is Treadmill. But Treadmill is dull and boring. Swimming could be very exciting depending on who else is swimming alongwith you in the pool ! Health Question & Answer

No, i don't think its overrated as an exercise because if you really swim and not fool around in the water, you will come out starved! Its energy consuming and really helps do away with abdominal fat as i'm sure you can testify to.
It's not a muscle building exercise so it does not increase muscle size. As for the sweat, you are in the water which is colder than the body and will always keep one cold as long as you are in it. Swimming does help lose weight...seriously.Health Question & Answer

Swimming is a great form of exercise. You work out a lot of parts of your body. I have this neighbor who used to weigh roughly 380 pounds or so, I believe, and over about a one month period of time of him swimming he dropped 40 pounds. Its also the best form of exercise because of the resistance that water puts against your body. I did a lot of eating over the summer =] but also a lot of swimming. It kept me in shape =] I think I even dropped a few pounds. Swimming is fun and keeps you in shape and lose weight if your dedicated to it =DHealth Question & Answer

the mushy feeling is your muscles and not just one or two a lot of muscles, I don't think swimming is overrated it allows you to work out multiple muscles in a very low impact method which is great. as far as the bigger people just like with any exercise its not going to work if you don't put an effort into it. Health Question & Answer

ur not seeing the sweat cause it all goes into the water, but believe me ur sweating
it is such a good exercise
the chubby ones are probably doing water arobics cause they cant exercise outside the water cause it makes their joints hurt
and for the most part good swimmers are lean and long so thats why u see the skinnies too
u may feel mushy cause ur getting a full workout that ur not used to, i love swimming cause it works out ur arms legs and stomach at one, but if u want to get riped than i would do fly storke or weights cause generally swimming builds up lean muscleHealth Question & Answer

I once saw a speaker named Covert Bailey (I think) who said that there were indications that swimming wasn't as effective an exercise as other forms of aerobic exercise. This was because breathing becomes somewhat constricted by the water pressure on chest and abdomen.

However, my doctor and physical therapist have both suggested swimming is actually a great exercise especially for "chubby" people as you call them because it reduces impact on the joints. (At 50 my knees are shot.) They say simply running in place in the water is a great workout.

What's interesting to me is the total narcissism and shallowness indicated by your comments about yourself and others. Perhaps instead of judging others and yourself on superficial appearances you might want to actually get to know other people as human beings. Even if you really think you're hot stuff now due to your fitness I'd invite you to look at a recent picture of folks like Jack LaLane and Richard Simmons to see if fitness is the only thing needed for your vision of acceptable looks.

There is a song in Franco Ziffarelli's Romeo and Juliet that has:

A rose will bloom
And then will fade
So does the Youth
So does the fairest maid

Meaning physical beauty doesn't last. If you don't overcome your shallowness you're apt to end up wondering why you're old and alone someday.Health Question & Answer
