What foods should I stay away from?!


Question: What foods should I stay away from.?
So I've started a simple diet/exercise plan. Walk at least 2 miles at least 3 times a week, eat more veggies and fruits, eat less junk. I started five, maybe six weeks ago.

The walking bits are going fine - I've started going on longer walks when I find the time, and I've added a few simple arm and stomach exercises to the mix. The problem is the dieting part.

I was doing okay for a little while, and then I fell back into my indulgent, undisciplined rut. I think if I had a better idea of how bad some stuff is for me, I'd be better at resisting it, so here it is: what sort of foods (specific examples are good) should I absolutely stay away from no matter how tempting they may be.? What foods are an ideal alternative.? What foods might seem like a healthy choice, but are actually bad.?

Any tips for staying motivated would be appreciated, too. Short of pinning photoshopped images of twiggy models all over my room, what would you recommend as tactics for keeping myself motivated.?Health Question & Answer

Here are some things I am t-r-y-i-n-g to do to defeat my appetite.

If it is a roll, donut, bagel, any kind of cake or pie, stay away from it. If you have a need for something sweet, eat a tic tac (really). Eat a banana for sweetness. Do not eat cereal bars or energy bars. Avoid sweetened sodas (pop). A red bell pepper is very sweet, too. Eat it with salsa which is healthy (fresh kind from cooler).

Eat a very filling breakfast. I eat cooked oatmeal with Splenda on it and a few raisins. It keeps you full for a while (I have the same yum, yum problem you have).

When you eat a bread, make sure it is whole grain (all of it, not just a little bit). Whole grain pasta is delicious. See if you can make yourself eat brown rice for the nutrients rather than white rice. That I'm having trouble with.

Stir fry with lots of veggies and just a little steak or chicken are very filling and good for you.

If there is something you just must have, eat one of them (one slice, not one cake.) Laura Schlessinger (radio advice columnist), who is skinny, said she just nibbles on one cookie and that fills her up. She's crazy, but try it.

Eat slowly and let your body take the time it needs to know you are full. As soon as you feel full, stop eating, even if you have to throw what's left over away. Otherwise, put it in the fridge for later. Wait at least 5 minutes before deciding on a desert. Drink a glass of water before starting to eat and don't wash your food down with soft drinks. It goes down so nicely but it causes you to over eat.

You are great in that you can walk that much. It will lessen your chance for osteoporosis, heart disease, cancer, depression, Alzheimer's, and any disease of old age. It lifts your mood and takes your mind off of food.

Try to find something to do when you are in bed just dying to eat something. Drink some water.

For a snack, eat a handful of plain roasted nuts.

If you get something you like to snack on in the house, divide it into small packs and freeze them, scattering them around the freezer.

Tonight we went out. I wanted stuffing with pork chops and gravy, mashed potatoes and glazed carrots. I ordered baked salmon, fruit bowl and cole slaw. Now, I have to convince myself that this does not give me permission to scarf down any potato chips because I was so "good."Health Question & Answer

Rule of thumb for dieters - stay away from anything fried. Fried staff is rich in fat and fat is rich in calories. So - if you're in a restaurant looking at the lunch menu, skip the deep friend chicken and chips and order the grilled chicken breast. It's less than half the calories of the deep friend stuff.
Rather than pinning twiggy images all over your room - why not set up a series of images of yourself, one from your heaviest weight at the left end of the line and as you add pictures, you'll see your own silhouette slimming down.
