I'm starting at the gym!?!

Question: I'm starting at the gym!.?
Whats a good programme for an absolute beginner, I used to be reasonably fit but not now! I really need to lose at least 4 stone.Health Question & Answer

I don't know what a stone is equivalent to, but the best thing to do is to flag down one of the personal trainers at the gym. The should spend a little time showing you how each of the machines work, and give you basic info as to how to start a proper program.

Many gyms also usually offer a complimentary session with a personal trainer, where they write out a plan for you and show you the machines.

If your gym does not have personal trainers, there should be at least one person on staff who is a registered trainer (its a law - not just anybody can open up a gym), so you may need to consult with that person by appointment. Ask the receptionish who it is.

In the meanwhile, you can't go wrong with just walking on a treadmill. Start out slow, and pump up the speed, and slowly progress to an incline. This will create some cardio endurance for you, and if you are consistently working out, you will absolutely lose weight.

The best advice a trainer gave me.? No matter what type of exercise you do, as long as you are moving you will lose weight. But, if you have a crappy diet, you will lose weight SOOOO slowly, so you have to eat right, too.Health Question & Answer

4 stones (56 lbs) is a lot, especially for a woman's frame.

If you need to shift that amount I don't think it would be wise for you to do it on your own. You really need the advice of a diet and fitness expert who can get you into the right eating and exercise regime - and can make sure you are physically fit enough to start it and will set you realistic targets and goals.

Hopefully your gym will have such an expert available.Health Question & Answer

Start of with 30 minutes of exercise 5 times a week. Gradually try and increase to 60-90 minutes of vigorous exercise. Any exercise has to be combined with a healthy reduced calorie diet in order to lose weight.

Ask the personal trainers at the gym, they will show you exercise routine/equipment to use.Health Question & Answer

Whatever you do, have a nice blend of cardio and weights.
Cardio = Burns the fat
Weights= Gives you shape and definition and tones your body up!

As a beginner, i would start off with doing 20 mins cardio, at a slow but steady pace. Always warm up whether a beginner or an athlete. This is very CRUCIAL. A 5 min warm up is fabulous, which you can do on the exercise bike at the gym. Then move into your workout, for roughly 20 mins if just starting off. A mixture of different cardio machines is also good. Say 10 mins treadmill, and 10 mins stepper. Then after this hit the weights. You could use the leg press machine, or grab some dumbells and do a few reps. also, you could do crunches and squats. Make use of those fitballs....they work a treat :)
In fact, the trainers at the gym should give you a program to follow anyway, and guide you all through it, and it's totally free of charge! Ask about it! My trainers at the gym do my programs. They change it once a month so you never get bored with the same old workout.

When you start feeling you can go on for longer, increase the length of cardio. But never overdo it!

And always have at least one day off a week. Starting off, i would do about 3 times a week until you get in the swing of it then increase it if you wish.

And as with any diet, you must eat healthily as well. But make sure you eat. Skipping meals is not the answer.

Good luck!!!!

To loose wight use this program:
- 30 minutes Cardio work, (treadmill/ bike)
- 30 minutes of weights, work all the muscles in the body, and lift it 25 times, if you can not lift it 25 times its too heavy. That's important.
- Cut all the rubbish out of you diet, but keep eating Carbohydrates.

If you do that you will soon loose weight, hope that helps. Health Question & Answer
