Shin splits, what causes them?!

Question: Shin splits, what causes them.?
Are shin splits caused because of intense running after being stationary or inactive for an extended period of time. If i start running and training more will they slowly go away.? Because I play in a competitive soccer team which only plays once a week, and my shins are always killing me, thing is, I have always had this problem and can never play comfortably because of this. I don't know if it is caused because of lack of training or if I am just stuck with this forever. Any suggestions.?Health Question & Answer

My uncle is a track coach in NM and he gave me awesome advice. I've done this and it cured my shin splits in 3 days. Sit on something where you legs can dangle freely (maybe 6-8 inches from sole to floor). Put a light dumbbell between your feet. Point your feet and flex your feet going slowly through the range of motion. You can also do this with an exer-band. also, walk frequently through the day on your heels forward and then backwards on tip-toe. Looks weird, but both exercises will strengthen and stretch those muscles and viola - pain free. Do these preemptive when increasing activity or breaking in new shoes.Health Question & Answer

Shin splints are injuries to the front of the outer leg. While the exact injury is not known, shin splints seem to result from inflammation from injury to the tendon and adjacent tissues in the front of the outer leg. Shin splints represent one member of a group of injuries called "overuse injuries." Shin splints occur most commonly in runners or aggressive walkers. So is is because of your overuse of that tendon that causes the pain. Try to use it as little as possible and then work your way up to building the strength in that area by running more than once a week. Make sure you stretch before you begin your activities, try icing the area when it is sore, and take ibuprofen to help with the pain and swelling. Good luck in soccer!
Health Question & Answer

Huh. Until she described them (front of outer leg), I didn't know what those occasional pains were.

With me, it seems like I wake up with them, otherwise I don't have them that day. And it's only maybe once every couple weeks. I must have a mild form, cuz they don't bother me much, it's kind of a funny sort of pain. I often get dehydrated overnite, and maybe that's what's causing it. You might try drinking a glass of water before you sleep (even if it makes you get up during the night).Health Question & Answer

They should begin to go away the more you exercise. Maybe try doing a brisk walk everyday or something active with your legs. Maybe ride a bike.?.? They are a pain, I would try stretching evryday too.Health Question & Answer
