A complete back workout should consist of working 4 areas on the back.. The lats(for width, the 'wings' of your back), traps( the big muscles visible on either side of your neck, from the front view, which also run down either side of your spine, to the middle of your back), your rhomboids (the muscles around your shoulder blades), and your lower back (to give that 'christmas tree' look to your lower back, and to support a strong, healthy back).
The pic you posted has all these muscles developed to a good level. here's what you need to do to get the same.

Lats: Wide-grip pulldowns. 3 x 8-12
Underhand pulldowns(closer grip). 2 x 8-12

Traps: Barbell/Dumbell Shrugs: 4 x 8-12

Rhomboids: Barbell/Seated Cable Rows. 4 x 8-12

Lower Back: Hyperextensions 3-4 x 8-12


This is a compete back workout, and can be done all together in the same workout. Use weight that is heavy enough to do the number of reps required. If you can do more than 12, up the weight.
Allow a month to two before you expect to see any significant improvement in your back muscles, visibly, anyway.
You can do this workout a maximum of twice a week, with at least 2-3 days rest between sessions.Health Question & Answer

The width of your back depends on the width of your shoulders and narrowness of your hips. those are genetic factors.
Beyond that, you can strengthen and enlarge the back muscles by cable rows, bent over rows, dumbell rows, one arm rows, wide rip chinups behind the neck, etc..

Miltary Press(When you sit straight up, and lift the barbell above your head, always do about 10% less then your incline.)
Pushups! Do 3 types Wide, narrow, and the Diamond!
