If you didn't want a hyperactive dog like a whippet you should have a basset hound. They're good couch potatoes.
Since you have one that needs to exercise, take him out for at least a 20 minute walk a day twice a day ideally.

u have to walk it. when it is raining and i cant walk my dog i put her on the tread mill and she loves it. other thing is get a 100 foot leash and play fetch in a big field. mainly dont be lazy walk your dog!Health Question & Answer
