Can a Shoulder Press on a Smith Machine do the same as a Military Press?!

Question: Can a Shoulder Press on a Smith Machine do the same as a Military Press.?
Well another user on yahoo answers gave me a good workout plan, so as I am pretty new to free weights I looked up these exercises, I am good with all of them but 1, the Military Press. I am very worried I will screw up and hurt myself, so I found the smith shoulder press, i wanna know if a smith shoulder press (seems pretty good for a newb) can have the same affect as a military press or if I should do a military press, if there is something inbetween those 2 that would be best for me plz tell meHealth Question & Answer

If you're new, you should always stick to machines first, and then move on to free weights. While the military press does work the shoulders, triceps, and back better, it also increases muscle stability and coordination.

But a machine is also a safer bet, and makes you MUCH less prone to injury than free weights. Stick to the machine until you get comfortable enough, and strong enough, or at least have a spotter, for the military press.Health Question & Answer

It is all in the body mechanics. Have a trainer spot you and watch how you position your long bone uf the upper arm "humerus" , shoulders and scapula. This is how you hurt yourself. Lifting too much weight with bad mechanics.Health Question & Answer

ok the smith machine is easier than free weight but generally works the same muscle other than your stabilizers but with out a spotter stay with the smith machineHealth Question & Answer

I presume there both using the same if not simular muscles, if you don't feel comfortable doing one then do the other. Don't risk injuring your self.
