What will happen if I run on an empty stomach?!

Question: What will happen if I run on an empty stomach.?
I have quite muscular legs from sprinting but I gave that up a few months ago and am now doing long distance for general fitness. What will happen to the muscles in my legs if I get up and run for about 35 mins early in the morning, not have breakfast but 3 hours after running have lunch (something like a salad). I have a low BF% and would like to know if I'll be burning fat or muscle...?
thanksHealth Question & Answer

You'll be losing BOTH fat and muscle. If you want to keep those muscles, give up running on an empty stomach, but if you want to lose them, then running on an empty stomach would be great. Although running on an empty stomach is optimal for fat loss, it's also when maximum muscle catabolism (when muscle mass is used for energy) will take place. Why.?

When you consume glucose (sugar), excess glucose, called glycogen, is stored in the muscles and liver, and when the muscles and liver are full, it is stored in adipose (fat) tissue. When you go to sleep, the glycogen storages from your muscles and liver are used up for natural functions your body does.

When you wake up, these glycogen storages are depleted, which causes you to be low on energy. Your body's primary source of energy is from carbohydrates, and stored energy will come from glycogen (which is excess glucose that came from carbohydrates, as mentioned above), but not when glycogen storages are depleted.

Now, when your body is out of these glycogen storages, it needs energy from somewhere else. So where can it take energy from.? Fat and muscle mass. If you do not eat, you haven't replaced glycogen storages, so your body takes energy from BOTH muscle mass, AND fat.

also, there is something called a nitrogen balance. In a positive nitrogen balance, you are losing muscle mass, because nitrogen (bonded to protein) is being excreted (this is also called catabolism). In a neutral nitrogen balance nothing is happening to your muscle mass.

In a positive nitrogen balance you are putting on muscle balance (also called anabolism). You are in a negative nitrogen balance in the morning, which occurs when you haven't had any protein in 3 hours.

Even if you had a slow-digesting protein supplement, which can keep you in a positive nitrogen balance for up to 7 hours, by the time you wake up, you will no longer be in a positive nitrogen balance. Running in the morning on an empty stomach while in a negative nitrogen balance is a sure fire way to lose loads of muscle mass.

First of all, breakfast is, as they say, the most important meal of the day. To be able to maintain your health, you need to eat breakfast. When the body does not get the nutrition it needs when it needs it (at breakfast), it will retain more of the fat and calories from other foods you eat during the day rather than leave them undigested. It is unwise to work your body so hard, yet supply it with few calories. Calories are the energy source for the body and all of its functions. When you deprive your body of the calories it needs, it breaks down other sources in the body to make up for the calories needed to run your body. With a low caloric intake, low BF%, and such a high activity level, you will be doing more harm to your body than good.Health Question & Answer

You should run on an empty stomach- not to empty though that's just uncomfartable. Do not skip breakfeast!! People who don't eat breakfeast tend to weigh more. Breakfeast is the meal that gives you energy for the rest of the day. If you have low body fat you probably won't lose fat, instead gain more muscle (that's what happened to me and now I have huge calves :/)Health Question & Answer

YOU ARE SUPPOSED TO RUN ON AN EMPTY STOMACH!

you will be buring fat and increasing youre muscle size. you cant run with food in you or you will have to stop,if you carry on, you will chuck upHealth Question & Answer

It is best to go without food, so yes you will burn more calories, but you should carry fluids with you to stay hydratedHealth Question & Answer
