For weight loss, it would be best to skip it totally and then add it back in moderation when he's at his goal weight. Alcohol is empty calories and not really beneficial to any health or diet plan.

I'm not anti drinking by any means, but I nix it when trying to lose weight. It's just not worth the extra (empty, non-nutritional) calories when the whole idea is to burn more calories than you consume.

A light beer or glass of wine over the weekend won't hurt him, but it won't help his progress either. If he's only got a "couple of" pounds to lose, he can easily do that in 2 - 4 wks. No reason he couldn't go alcohol free for that long.Health Question & Answer

Alcohol is terrible during dieting and exercise, for 2 reasons. One, it is empty calories. At 7kcal/gram, it is almost 2x as much calories as carbohydrates (4kcal/gram) and almost as many calories as fat (9kcal/gram).

Beyond this, alcohol inhibits testosterone in the body. When (not if, WHEN) your father is exercising, his body will produce less lean mass because of the lowered levels of testosterone.

So, to sum up, know that a glass of wine has 130ish calories. Doesn't seem like a lot, but 2 glasses is 260 calories, probably 13% of your dads daily allowance. Drinking alcohol won't be the end of his diet, but it should be limited a good bit.Health Question & Answer

Beer contains a lot of calories, cut that out completely or restrict to 1 or 2 a week.
I think wine is a bit better for you though so could he drink that instead of a beer.?Health Question & Answer

zero?
Beer is probably one of the top reasons he is overweight. Maybe a glass on the weekends?Health Question & Answer
