I need a professional on this one, or even someone who has overcome their unhealthy habits involving eating and not working out. I have been in a rut for the past like 4 years (I'm turning 19 in February), and I really want to be a healthier person and be happy with myself, but I have A HORRIBLE diet and i just don't know what to eat. what are some foods that help with losing weight, and how can i motivate myself to stick with a workout and eating plan for the rest of my life so I can be healthy.? someone please help! any nutritionist out there.?Health Question & Answer

While I am not a professional, I have been successful in overcoming healthy eating habits and losing weight over the past few weeks, and I am still going strong. One of the keys is to never completely deny yourself anything.

Your primary focus should be foods that will help sustain you and keep you from being hungrier constantly. These foods include whole grains, lean proteins, fruit, vegetables, and fat-free dairy products. Make sure that you have at least two lean protein and dairy servings each day and five servings of fruits and vegetables. I would recommend you track everything you eat so that you can be sure you are eating healthily.

I always reward myself for a good day's eating. Being on the new Weight Watchers Momentum program, I find myself able to stretch my points. At the end of the day I have enough points for some kind of treat, such as a frappucino at Starbucks. These treats motivate me to eat healthily during the day because I start to forget that I am on a "diet." Remember that this treat is at the end of the day to reward yourself for eating healthily-not a mid-day snack.

One of the easiest ways to get more food for a smaller amount of calories is by adding fruit and/or vegetables to every meal. Even if you have a TV Dinner, pour it out onto a plate and add steamed vegetables or a side salad with fat-free or light dressing (I recommend Fat-Free Italian). As long as you do not add extra butter or go overboard with the dressing, you will double the amount of food you would normally have with a TV Dinner with almost no calories. Doing this with all three meals (or even just lunch and dinner; I prefer to add fruit to my breakfast), will help you eat a higher volume of food while not consuming too many calories.

The experts recommend that you get at least thirty minutes of moderate physical activity on most days of the week. One of the easiest ways to do this is by walking in place in front of the Television. Spend one of your favorite half-hour programs walking in place. You can also go to a playground and goof off with friends. Run around, swing on the swings, and just act like kids again. Find simple and fun ways to get more exercise, and just make sure you stick to it. It's hard, I know. I put down my exercise (using the Wii Fit) in my planner's to-do list for each day. Each day, then, I have to do half-an-hour of exercise at some point of each day (even if it is in 10 minute sessions). I've also considered making me a sticker chart and rewarding myself for X-number of days of consecutive exercise. Just find something that works for you, like finding some kind of reward for each day of exercise.

Eat six small meals a day, making sure to stick with serving sizes. Make sure you're eating whole grains, low-fat dairy, and protein. Don't drink soda.
Obviously there's a lot more to it than that, but it's a start. There's loads of books out there for you.
Here's a bit of motivation that works for me: If you like to run (or think you might), sign up and pay for a race (even a 5k). Having already paid for it gives great motivation to not waste your money. Go to runnersworld.com for a list of races and training plans (including plans for beginners).Health Question & Answer
