Best way to quit smoking!! HELP!!?!

Question: Best way to quit smoking!! HELP!!.?
My husband has been given up to five years to live if he continues smoking. He's been smoking cigarettes for 40 years now. Dr said he is only getting 20% oxygen in his breathing patterns. He needs to stop now and needs any advice of ways that work. Nope it wasn't motivation enough to hear his life could be cut short . He's tried the patch and the gum but it did nothing for him. Any ideas are welcome.Health Question & Answer

I believe if you want to quit you just quit. If he doesn't want it for himself, it's hard to quit using anything on the market. I quit in 1999 cold turkey, threw away packs of unopened cigarettes. And I enjoyed smoking. It was hard, I won't lie, but if you just hang on till the craving for the cigarette wanes, in time it gets easier, and the distance between cravings gets longer and longer. No easy way to quit I'm afraid. But like I said, you have to really want it.

I wish him the best.Health Question & Answer

Well to be honest the Patch did work for me. Back in 1992. Haven't smoked since. And hubby dear still does. He has heart disease and diabetes and still won't quit. Blames stress and anxiety for the reason he won't try.

To be truthful if your husband doesn't really want to quit he can't and won't. Even if the doctor told him he is going to die in 5 years. It's got to be his decision and his alone. Until he makes that decision there is nothing you or his doctor can say to make him stop.

Sorry I know you want more than anything for him to stop but that's just the way it is.Health Question & Answer

call the "Quitline" because that's a non profit organization so their only interest is to help you quit. and tell him about if he dies that how his family would feel because maybe the thought of his family's grief would encourage him more to stop the the thought of death. also passive smoking is more harmful than normal smoking so everyone around him will also be physically harmed.Health Question & Answer

I'd try some self help books, but the only real way is to smoke zero cigarettes, it only takes three full days for the addiction to go away, but if you smoke even a single cigarette, you prolong the torture for another three days. The rest is just a mental addiction that can be solved with a positive attitude and lots and lots of mints.Health Question & Answer

Try gradually reducing a cigarette a day for 1st week
then 2 per day 2nd week & so on.
If you need some thing to keep your mind off CIG eat /chew heaps of chewing gum daily.
Eat packets of salty chips.
Drink plain tea with sugar or sweetener as per your taste.
It takes about month or so! but he will get there eventually.
GOOD LUCK.Health Question & Answer

Did the doctor mention the new shot.?
Theres a shot out now that is suppose to help with the addiction. I dont know much about it. I saw the poster in a docs office.

I've heard hypnosis works, as well. But thats only if you go for that sort of thing.

Good luck. Hide them cigarettes! :( I know you don't want to lose him!Health Question & Answer

CHANTIX!!!!!!! If he wants to quit smoking - go to the doctor and try this. It cuts down on an urge to smoke and it really does work. It is a pill taken morning and night. He has to want to quit otherwise nothing will work!Health Question & Answer

I would suggest the prescription drug Chantix. However, if he doesn't feel motivated to quit, nothing will make him stop.Health Question & Answer
