My doctor can't or won't prescribe the only medicine that helps me?!

Question: My doctor can't or won't prescribe the only medicine that helps me.?
A little over a year ago I went to my doctor with a rotator cuff injury and she was going to prescribe vicodin for the pain, but before she could I had to sign a contract and do a urine test. Like an idiot, I did the urine test and it came up positive for pot which I had done 2 weeks earlier. Now I am having back problems, pain radiating down my legs, etc. She has prescribed me tramadol and ibuprofen but sometimes the pain is bad enough that those medicines don't work. There have been a couple times when I had to go to urgent care because it hurt so much. What am I supposed to do, I don't think it would be a good idea to tell the urgent care doc the reason my doc won't give me anything stronger for the bad days, but I am sure they are wondering why my doctor is not helping me. What should I do.? I don't want the urgent care to think that I am going behind my doctors back to get pain medicine, but she can't or won't help me. What is the deal with that.? Can't she give me another drug test.? Should I tell the urgent care doctor my dilemma.? Please help. ThanksHealth Question & Answer

They do the drug tests to make sure you're not getting pain meds from another source. Congratulations, you'll NEVER get narcotics from this pain doc since you ARE getting pain meds from another source. Not only do you now look like a druggie in illegal drug terms, but you're showing that you'll go to another source to get pain meds. You started off on a bad foot with this doc (the marijuana), and you're continuing to verify that you'll go elsewhere for meds if you don't feel you're getting what you want.
My suggestion- don't take ANYTHING except OTC painkillers for about a month, then find yourself another pain management center. And follow their regimen, or you'll find yourself not being able to get meds again.
Good luck with this!Health Question & Answer

pot shouldn't have anything to do with vicodin. pot isn't addictive, and vicodin is potentially addictive. Anyway, if your doctor isn't doing anything to help you, find a doctor who will. There's nothing wrong with going to urgent care if your pain is severe and your doctor will not listen. But, my advice is to do more pot ;) You don't care about pain when you're high :pHealth Question & Answer

Why dont you ask your doctor for another urine test to show her that you have not been using the "pot" and you really need the stronger pain relief.?Health Question & Answer

Try talking to your doctor about your issues...if your doctor is still unwilling to prescribe you anything stronger, it may be time to switch doctors....i wouldn't think a failed pot test would keep a doc from giving you pain pills...although the doc would prob control how many you were getting each week if they believed you had a problem....something you might mention to your doctor try to work something out where she will prescribe you like two on your bad days, and you use the other stuff on your not so bad days.Health Question & Answer

I take long-term slow-release Tramadol for my back pain...maybe this option would work for you too...also I was told by my Neurosurgeon and pain management specialist that once you go onto Narcotics you are basically stuck with them forever and you wont get relief from the milder medications. So they basically save those until its the absolute last resort.

Have you tried plain old ice-therapy on your shoulder.?...or a cortisone shot.?...those are the things that give me the greatest relief.Health Question & Answer

The fact you have to do a drug test for this drug means you should have kept your nose clean. There may be a risk of the drug becoming addictive, also it may be a dangerous combination. You messed up, now clean up and deal with it.Health Question & Answer
