I'm in track, season conditioning started last week. My two friends and I all ended up pulling our hamstring (hamstring along with my groin for me!) during Monday's practice. We sat out for the running drills, and instead stretched. A lot, but not too much. My coach, who is also a PT, stretched each one of us out individually, and it hurt like CRAZY, but it felt better in the end. But if you can't see a PT or anyone else who knows how to properly stretch your body out, try this. 5-10 minutes of stretching, and then take a 5-10 minute break. Do another 5-10 minutes of stretching, 5-10 minutes break. Then when you're done stretching, get out that ice! Ice directly on for 15 minutes, off 15 minutes, then on 15 minutes again. Continue this for however long you need to. It's important to stretch, and then ice. Think of it this way- if you want to stretch a rubber band out to its maximum pull, you wouldn't stick it in a freezer and then stretch it out. It would snap! You want to work with the rubber band, warming it up, pulling it gradually. After you finish stretching, then ice.

Here are a couple of stretches you can do. Sit down on the ground, with one leg in front of you, with the other one tucked to the side. On the leg that is tucked, your foot should be on the outside of your leg, not the inside toward your pelvis. Contrary to what most people do with putting their foot in the inside, stretching this way can help. You don't necessarily have to lean and touch your foot on the extended leg, just push until you feel the stretch in your hamstring. It's going to hurt, but the more you stretch, the better you'll feel. Then after that, rotate just your upper body so your hands are on the ground over the extended leg. This stretches out your outer quads, and you should feel it. Then switch legs.

Here's another good stretch to do if you can find somebody to help you. Lie down flat on your back, both legs out. The person should take your leg, and bend it so that your knee is to or pretty close to your chest. Have them rotate your leg in that position slowly in circles, three in one direction, three in the other. Then switch legs.

Overall, pulled hamstrings take a couple of days. Stretching and icing will help it feel better. Good luck!Health Question & Answer

heat up the muscle, and stretch it out. Once you have done that ice the muscle as much as possible. Hope it works, you may want to go to physio tooHealth Question & Answer
