If you wanted it to last forever, I would suggest something along the lines of an automotive paint or (even more durable) powder coat.

Since hopefully you won't be on crutches forever :D, I would suggest using this method:

1. Strip all of the rubber and plastic that you can get off of the crutches. Basically anything that you don't want paint to get on.

2. Get some 3M scotchbrite pads and rub them on the entire surface of the crutch. The goal is to roughen up the entire surface so that the paint will adhere.

3. Put some paint thinner on a rag and wipe off the entire surface, making sure to remove any dirt/grease/oil/etc. After this step, try not to touch the crutch anymore, because the oil from your hands will stick to it

4. Using string or wire, hang the crutch from a tree branch or the ceiling

5. Get some good quality spray paint. Shake the can really well for a few minutes, then apply light coats of paint to the crutch. Applying too heavy of a coat will make it run and take a long time to dry.

6. If you wish, apply more coats or paint (Depending on the brand, it might have certain times that you can apply a second coat, like within two hours or after 24-48), or spray on a clear coat to protect the paint even more. Once you are done painting, let the crutch dry for 24-48 hours (different for different brands of paint) before you assemble and use them again.Health Question & Answer
