Hello, I'm 12 and I broke my leg some days ago and got a cast, I broke my shin bone playing soccer, I got a big cast, at least I chose the color, blue. But the problem is why do I need a cast so big.? I'm stuck in bed, I get bored much at a day, I'm uncomfortable, my leg hurts. My mom said that I may need a wheelchair to go to school, or at least I would need crutches. I want to be more mobile. The doctor said that I have to be in the cast for the next 6-8 weeks. Please answer my question and try to make me feel better about this if you want to. THANKS.Health Question & Answer

The reason is that they don't want you twisting your lower leg or bending your knee which might pull the bones out of alignment. So they cast above your knee to make sure the bones stay in alignment.

The actual term is a Long Leg Cast or LLC. This is because a short leg cast (SLC) would not properly protect the broken bone in that area. A LLC not only protects the full leg (Instead of half the shin), but also helps keep the broken bone(s) from moving.Health Question & Answer
