Question: Help..i had some liver funtion test done 2 weeks ago here is the results:::.?
ALT-164, AST -72 I NEED SOME ADVICE...Health Question & Answer

Answers:
You don't have the whole picture here.

Liver doctors usually do three different types
of tests to see how the liver is doing:
1. the liver enzymes: (ALT, AST, GGT, and
Alk PHos) These show the doctor if there
may be damage to the liver cells.
2. the liver function tests: (Bilirubin, INR,
Albumin) these show how well the cells
are able to function to do the job of keeping
the body healthy.
3. Viral testing...to see if the liver problem was
caused by a virus...like Hep A,B,C, etc.

You have just mentioned two of the liver
enzymes. This doesn't show the whole
picture.
The ALT is more specific to the liver because
most of it is made in the liver...The AST isn't,
because it is made in other organs about the
same as in the liver.

also, no one blood test is totally considered
100% accurate. There are many things that
can affect the test...the way the test was done,
whether the person exercised before the test,
and there are other things. The doctor usually
does more than one go of blood work to be
sure, before going on to do other testing like
a ultrasound, CT scan, or MRI. Blood tests
are just a hint that something may be wrong.

All liver patients are told not to drink any
type of alcohol products. The are told not
to take any drugs that the doctor has not
prescribed or approved of. The patient needs
to inform the doctor about all medications they
are taking: over the counter, herbs, herbal teas,
vitamins, minerals, supplements, and drugs
prescribed by other doctors. That is because
drugs goes through the liver first, to be broken
down, before going to the rest of the body.
If a person finds out they do have a liver problem..they need to stay as healthy as
possible and not make the body weaker by
getting sick other ways. It is best to wash
hands often, use purell or germ cleaners in
between times, stay away from open salad
bars where people put their hands into or can
sneeze into, and not be around them when
they are sick with a cold or flu.

It is hard to wait to see what the doctor will
say about this. In some cases, these tests
will go back into normal range.
To learn more about these tests, just place
them on this site and it will bring it up for you.
It really isn't hard to understand:

You can also type in Liver enzymes or liver
function tests in your search engine and
it will bring up tons of information.

Some of the causes of a liver problems can
be alcohol consumption, medication
toxification, chemical exposure, hereditary
conditions, auto immune disease, fatty liver
disease, biliary obstruction or malformation,
viral infections like Hep A, B, C, etc.,
cardiac problems, and there are others.

It is very important for you to follow your
doctors instructions now. If this turns out
to be a true liver problem...ask to be referred
to a gastroenterologist or hepatologist.

I hope this information is of some help to you.Health Question & Answer
