Shallow cut won't stop bleeding, is this a problem?!

Question: Shallow cut won't stop bleeding, is this a problem.?
Cut the outside of my nose today on a pencap (I know). It is very shallow but took about four hours to stop bleeding. Applied direct pressure for prolonged periods (10 minutes) without stopping. Is there something else going on.?

I'm relatively healthy, no big problems, never had this before.

Peace to all.Health Question & Answer

Nice. This made me laugh, I'm glad you shared. I needed to know someone else is clumsy (at least once). For the white spot, if it bothers you, you could put on some concealer/cover up (borrow from girlfriend/sister/mother, if needed).Health Question & Answer

Do you have problems with bruising - you know, lightly hit the side of a table and get a bruise.?
Do you find bruises take longer to go away.?
Do shallow cuts consistently take a long time to stop bleeding, or is this a one time occurrence.?
Do you get swollen joints every once in a while for no good reason.?
Is there anyone in your family with a similar problem.?

If you have family history of this, or if you've had these types of problems forever, it may be a genetic disorder where your are missing some clotting factor. If this is not a huge problem, it's probably a minor clotting factor that only sometimes gives you a problem. Regardless, you should get tested for this, and you can receive the clotting factor that you are missing in a solution, in case you ever have a serious wound and bleed lots - it will help you stop the bleed.

Alternatively, if this is a one time thing, or really rare, you could be missing some vitamins. Vitamin K is specifically one that your liver needs to make clotting factors. However, it's rare to be deficient in it. I can't recommend multivitamins, there is no evidence that they work. However, do take a look at your diet and make sure you get all colours of the rainbow in your veggies (red and green specifically) - red and green veggies tend to be the highest in stuff like Vit C, Vit K, Iron etc.

As to how to stop a superficial cut next time, apply cold and pressure, 10 mins off 10 mins on. Maybe take an ice cube (frozen peas, etc), wrap in paper towel, and apply to cut. also - this is important - make sure you elevate it above heart level. This lowers the pressure of the bleed significantly and helps it stop.

EDIT: to answerer below. Dude: the nose is super rich in blood. Nose and cheeks are the bloodiest parts of the skin. It's the poorly perfused areas that stop bleeding faster due to blood stasis. The highly perfused areas take longer to stop bleeding due to constant blood flow.

On that note - the nose is definitely above heart level.... sorry, forgot it was the nose. Still, it should not take 4 hours. The worst bleeds I have take 15 mins at most to stop, even on face.Health Question & Answer

It stopped bleeding eventually, you're fine. It might have taken longer than other body parts because there's not as much blood perfusion there, so platelets took longer to build up than they would in a more vascularized part of your body.

Just an idea.

If you notice in the future that other wounds in other places take a long time to stop bleeding, you'll want to ask a doctor about it, and probably run some simple tests to make sure you don't have a clotting disorder.

Don't jump to that conclusion right away though - like I said, it's more likely to be due to the type of tissue.Health Question & Answer

try asking your doctor to check on your clotting factor and bleeding time.Health Question & Answer
