Answers:
Usually 5 mg of hydrocodone per teaspoon.. Hydrocodone (original brand name Vicodin) is stronger mg per mg than codeine phosphate by a factor of about 8 (5 mg hydro = 40 mg codeine).. However, the primary difference is duration.. Hydrocodone acts slowly; can take an hour to feel the analgesic effects vs 20-30 minutes for codeine.. But, it lasts much longer, with a half-life of nearly 4 hours vs less than 3 for codeine..Health Question & Answer

There is no codeine in hydrocodone syrup.. Hydrocodone is a semisynthetic derivative of codeine...... for dose conversion (eg, if you are usually prescribed codeine and wonder how this new drug will affect you), a good rule of thumb is that 5mg hydrocodone is roughly equivalent to 30mg codeine**.. As for how much hydrocodone is in there, that depends on the concentration of the hydrocodone syrup.. There should be some indication on the label of mg/mL or something like that.. One ounce is about 30mL.. So multiply the mg/mL concentration by 30 and that is the mg of hydrocodone you will have in an ounce.. Multiply that number by 6 if you want to know a similar dose of codeine if that is what you are more familiar with..

**This is just a rule of thumb.. Everyone reacts differently.. An advantage to hydrocodone is that fewer people are allergic to it than to codeine, but the opposite can sometimes be true as well..Health Question & Answer
