Photosensitivity in Elavil?!

Question: Photosensitivity in Elavil.?
I have just recently been prescribed Elavil from my doctor to help with my chronic pain and sleep problem.. I was reading about it when I came across that there was a side effect that causes photosensitivity.. I was wondering how strong of a dose does a person need to take to develop photosensitivity, or does it just depend on the person..

I am taking 25 mg at night, but I have always been rather sensitive to sunlight.. I burn very easily and severely with sunscreen on that I apply regularly, and bright sunlight also can trigger my migraines..

Would Elavil make my "photosensitivity" worse.?Health Question & Answer

Answers:
I have been on 25mg Elavil for three years for chronic pain.. I have light/medium skin, and I burn relatively easily.. I have noticed that when I am not wearing sunscreen, I burn more quickly than expected....and the burns tend to be pretty severe.. I spent just over an hour in the sun one day, and was horribly burned.. This wouldn't typically be my skins response without the Elavil.. It can be misleading at times though, because it is not consistent.. Sometimes I can be in the sun with no reaction, and other times I get red pretty quickly.. However, when I wear sunscreen, I tend to tan and burn about the same as usual.. Sadly, it might take some trial and error, and a bad burn to teach you your lesson.. You don't need to slather on SPF 75 every morning, but you might need to be a bit more cautious than usual if you plan on being out in the sun.. I hope this helps, and best of luck with your pain! Take care!Health Question & Answer
