I have had problems sleeping lately and was wondering...?!

Question: I have had problems sleeping lately and was wondering.......?
I am 17 years old and in the last 3 weeks or so I have not been able to sleep..

First of all, I stay up pretty late...... till about 2am.. Then I wake up about ten times before the time I SHOULD be waking up...... which is around 9 or 10 in the morning.. I can never stay awake through the night..

I've never had problems before in my life.. Idk why I wake up so much, but I was wondering if there were any medicines or natural things that could help me fall asleep and stay asleep long enough that I can can actually feel rested..Health Question & Answer

First off, it is completely normal for someone your age to be staying up late.. Teenagers have a shift in their internal clocks that cause their sleepy-time to be much later than older adults, and it also causes them to sleep later in the day..

Secondly, what are you doing prior to going to bed.? Are you drinking lots of caffeine or chocolate.? Are you playing video games at all hours of the night.? Are you falling asleep to a television.? All of the above should be avoided AT LEAST two hours before bedtime, because they stimulate the brain to the point where the brain wants to stay awake..

Third, do you have a lot on your mind.? When someone is anxious, it is much more likely to wake up earlier than normal, or several times throughout the day..

My advice is to follow, as best you can, a sleep regime to help you rest.. Do soothing, calming things before bed, like reading a book, listening to music, taking a relaxing bath- anything to help break this cycle of not being able to rest.. Avoid those caffeinated products at least 2 hours before bedtime.. Avoid eating a lot of food before bedtime.. Do not exercise or engage in a lot of stimulus before bedtime..

As far as medication goes, I would NOT recommend any actual medicines without first consulting your parents or your physician, as you are underage.. There ARE natural things you can purchase, mainly something called melatonin (melatonin is a hormone that is produced in your body naturally that controls feeling sleepy versus feeling awake), however I believe you must be of adult age to purchase such a thing.. Talk to your parents and see what the best options are, and try to have this sleep preparation ritual down to help getting you to sleep..

Hope it helps!Health Question & Answer

yer the same thing is happening to me at the moment, i reckon because i have too many unresolved things on my mind and i tend to think to much..

you can go to an osteopath if you want something natural to help you sleep and they might be able to advise you on the cause of this loss of sleep.. however if you want something direct i would suggest simply going to your gp or local doctor and maybe they can perscribe something..Health Question & Answer

I had the exact same problem few months ago!!
don't worry! usually lack of sleep is due to an overacted mind, you might find herbal teas work, try to clear your mind completely before going to bed, also its been proven that watching tv or using a computer before you sleep is a really bad idea try to completely relax a good hour before u hit the sack!
if you continue having sleep problems see your doctor and they'll give u some sleeping tablets..
hope this helped a little..
good luck hun.. xHealth Question & Answer

It definitely sounds like stress is keeping you up.. The best suggestion I can make is to take a benadryl (generically known as Diphenhydramine).. It is just a very mild anti-histamine but makes most people drowsy.. It has no risk of addiction and is 100% safe to take..Health Question & Answer

Depression could be a factor especially if it runs in the family but you could also be going through some hormone changes at your age.. If you are the typical teenager who stays up late until 2 am on weekends then your effecting your body clock.. An option is to lay down, close your eyes and think of a beach with a waterfall that is peaceful and picture yourself laying on that beach breathing slowly into a nice sleep under an umbrella for shade.. It puts your mind into a relaxing state which helps you to fall asleep.. also I'm a surfer and I know surfers who travel there is a natural herb called Valerian.. You can get it at rite aid or a drug store like that.. It helps you to relax and fall asleep naturally and wake up the next day feeling refreshed.. I would try this first though.. What I do to help me sleep is read a book and drink some hot herbal tea called sleepy time tea.. Works every time..Health Question & Answer
