I choose Morphine because it is the stronger of the two and it lasted longer, but it wasn't enough and they designed a "cocktail" specifically for me.. BUT......if it is not enough be sure to tell them and they will be able to make what is known as a "designer" cocktail that will help with your pain.. You need to be as comfortable as possible so that you can heal and get up and moving as soon as possible........not rushing out of the hospital, just up and moving.. DO NOT be afraid to ask for more pain medication if you do not feel it is enough.. You are having MAJOR, MAJOR surgery!!!!

Morphine is much stronger than Demerol.. I'd try Morphine over Demerol for major abdominal surgery.. Having had two very major adb surgeries, I'll go for the strongest thing I can get..
Make sure that the anesthesiologist also give you a PRN anti-nausea medication, too.. PRN means that if you need it, you can ask for it..Health Question & Answer

Morphine and Demerol are very similar.. They both are very effective drugs for pain.. The side effects are almost the same for each other.. I haven't noticed a difference in the list.. They are both addictive and can cause confusion.. They can even cause hallucinations at times.. As long as you're not abusing, and I doubt you would, you don't have to worry about addiction as much..

If it were up to me, I'd choose Morphine..Health Question & Answer
