It's always a good idea to see a doctor when you're in severe pain or have considerable deformity after an injury..
In the meanwhile, RICE it and see if it improves any:
Rest : avoid using the bum knee and walking around as much as possible
Ice: continue icing it - for 10-15 minute periods ever 30-45 minutes
Compression: consider wrapping your knee in an elastic (ace) bandage..
Elevation: elevate your knee above the level of your heart.. Pillows work well too..
I'd also recommend taking an anti-inflammatory such as ibuprofen or aspirin..
Hope it feels better!Health Question & Answer

It depends when you hurt it, I would wait about a day, and do your best to stay off of it, and keep it elevated.. Make sure that after 48 hours you switch from putting ice on it to using a heating device.. If the swelling in your knee doesn't go down in a day or two, I would go see a doctor.. No, just keep ice on it for now and prop it up on something......The swelling should go down with ice although it will probably be sore for a few days......If you find it only getting worse over the next few days then see a doctor.. Take OTC pain meds.. if you want..Health Question & Answer
